I’m not sure if depression, maybe it’s work and I’m spoilt. Definitely hormones aggravate things.

i often feel flat and in the mornings short fused. I enjoy eating carbs. I love my kids but my little one said to me recently I’m always negative I don’t talk about anything positive in my life.

seeking solidarity and I might be in the wrong place as I know lots of those in here need so much more than I.

I'm irritable at the best of times but since coming back from my summer holidays, I've been in a real "funk". Don't enjoy work, have been grumpy with my partner, and generally not enjoying life. Definitely hormonal somewhere in there. I went to the GP and had a chat and I'm getting bloods done as a first step.

fruitbrewhaha · 03/10/2023 13:56

Yep. I’m 48 and peri menopausal. My relationship with dp is shit and there’s a lot of arguing in our house.

fruitbrewhaha · 03/10/2023 13:59

I’ve had a blood test. I’m currently on hrt and they have said 6 months ago that my levels were fine so I’ve just kept pushing on but this last 12 months have been shit. GP has suggested anti depressants. While I’m not anti them, and I do feel depressed, I feel like it’s a hormonal problem so the ssri will just patch over without solving anything.

A friend has suggested fasting.

Ahumanjellyfish · 04/10/2023 03:14

ruitbrewhaha I’m sorry to hear you have this too. I started hrt which helped somewhat. Now persisting, How does fasting help I wonder? We’re in similar positions, I’m wondering whether to start antidepressants too.

JamMakingWannaBe so sorry to hear this. Similar boat. Having bloods may flag something physiological. Have you tried anything diet/sleep talking to anyone?

Yes me too. I'm likely peri menopausal due to age, but I haven't had periods for years as have a Mirena IUD.

I was always one to look on the bright side of things but last year or so I just seem to see the negative first. I sometimes wonder if I'm just trying to be realistic about things and not raise my expectations! Bu
T I don't think it makes me fun to be around

seagulldown · 04/10/2023 03:28

Even this week at work where we had a major success I was going on about the few downsides. I could hear myself sounding miserable but just couldn't stop and enjoy the moment

They are testing thyroid, anemia and have slight concerns about recent bad ovulation pain. It could be meno. They have suggested depression. I eat and sleep fairly well. Fasting would just make me grumpy and hungry!

It doesn't! But small transition period and you have to do it properly and prepare for it, not just suddenly not eat one day.

You really don't feel hungry/hangry and the benefits to your hormones and sleep are great which is probably the root of the irritability/moods.

OP, my advice would be a combo of the following:

  1. Eating better (focus on fuelling with nutritionally rich food - e.g. less shit carbs and sugar) and Fasting (read Fast Like a Girl by Dr Mindy Pelz)
  2. Movement - find a way to get rid of your cortisol spikes (long walks, go for a run, sweat it out at the gym?)
  3. Mindset - while a lot of the issues can be medical, we need to work so much harder on our mindset when approaching or in our 40s (assuming you are similar age). Is there anything in particular you struggle with? Happy to recommend books or podcasts. You may also benefit from online coaching or counselling (happy to recommend places also)
  4. Prioritise sleep!
AInightingale · 04/10/2023 21:56

Get the processed sugar and carbs out of your diet for a week and see if it improves your mood. Small amount of complex carbs only. Don't eat after 7pm. Set yourself a fitness target, even walking 3 miles a day for a week. See how you feel in the mornings.

Trash carbs, sugar and menopause is a bad combo.

Thank you for your really thoughtful message ilovemydogmore!

sleep is def one I need to work on, husband thrives of 6 hours where I struggle to get a good night’s sleep. I often feel shattered. Yet I don’t sleep well. I woke from 2 am to 4 (too hot) it’s a Vicious cycle as then I don’t want to do exercise.

food wise - I just feel like stuffing carbs, not even the processed ones it can be wholegrain sourdough sprinkled with seeds 😅
I’m not overweight but aware I’ve gained a few lbs and often eating until uncomfortable full but I don’t think that’s my root cause of the issue.

I am mid forties - I started hrt a year ago. I just feel meh. No spark, brain fog just like I jump from irritation to can’t be bothered.

I look rougher these days too, I know, part of the process but jowls, my eyes are tired and I just feel like getting the duvet and putting it over my head. I would so embarrassed if anyone who I knew, if the knew how I am feeling. First world problems.

I was interested in the fasting, oddly I’m prone to bingeing when stressed and down but I noticed some years ago fasting I really feel might have improved my mood. I can’t seem to do it now though I get to 10 each day and raid the cupboards. I sound a delight don’t I 😂.

sorry for anyone else who feels like this. I’m fortunate. Yet can’t kick the feeling.

This seems like great advice - now just need to somehow implement it!
