Misdiagnosed with GAD?!

I know, I know, I'm not a healthcare professional so should let them do their jobs but I can't help but wonder if I've been misdiagnosed.

Psychiatrist diagnosed me with severe generalised anxiety disorder and depression, prescribed me 10mg escitalopram.
After 6 weeks of feeling like a zombie and paralysing fatigue, Psychiatrist doubled my medication to 20mg.

Currently on week 8, no change and still don't have the ability to focus on the things I need to do (basic mundane life stuff, parenting stuff, work stuff).

A lot of ADHD symptoms resonate with me and I mentioned this to the Psychiatrist at my first appointment.

I guess my question is: has anybody been misdiagnosed with something which eventually turned out to be ADHD?

@TroubleOverBridgedWater I can relate! I was diagnosed with CPTSD nearly 3 years ago and since then both my Mum, Brother and Sister have been diagnosed with ADHD. I had an assessment but wasn’t diagnosed because although I meet the criteria as an adult, the symptoms weren’t there from childhood. It’s so confusing.

Interestingly before my sister was diagnosed with ADHD she was diagnosed with GAD so yes it can happen. I guess GAD is easier to diagnose, there is a much more rigorous assessment process for ADHD. Have you tried an online screening test for ADHD?

The two conditions aren’t mutually exclusive, it’s possible to have both. People with untreated ADHD are at greater risk of developing all sorts of mental health problems.

Most mainstream mental health services cannot diagnose ADHD, that would be a specific team. So he can’t diagnose ADHD, but maybe talk to him about it?

I'm on mirtazapine for anxiety. I have cfs and trauma.

I'm pretty sure the linking factor is adhd/autism.
