Being clinically insane - what help is available?

Have you ever known anyone that was/is actually insane? I have someone in my life who I think is and I want to try to support them but I just don't know how.

I'm not talking about personality disorders (although there's an element of that). I mean someone whose grasp on reality just isn't there?

All the stuff online and in the media seems to portray people with mental illness as manipulative or evil in some way, probably because it only ever comes out when accused of murder or something similar and it's used as a defence.

This person has no ill intent, they are very caring towards their loved ones but they have very clear memories of things that have not happened and also do not remember things that have, which has led to them and others getting into trouble. Again, no ill intent but they have made claims which have turned out not to be true (based on facts) and has led to them being cautioned or sectioned several times.

I just don't really know what to do to help? This person has several diagnoses (C-PTSD, BPD, OCD, autism) but mostly can cope with everyday life, until they have a blackout and then again it's a case of waking up in a police cell or having been sectioned for trying to jump off a bridge or something. They have a good job and are a high achiever but have lost several jobs in the past and it's looking like this one may go the same way.

I don't know where to turn for help! NHS offer nothing, being sectioned is just for 24 hours or so at a time and there doesn't seem to be any other support available. Are they meant to just stumble into suicide? I honestly feel like there's no other route for them at the moment.

Assessment available via Gp referral into mental health services which may lead to a community team referral for support

Reading your post, are you a friend, partner or family? You have observed their behaviour and engagement with mental health. I appreciate that’s probably been really stressful . What help would you like to support this person.

mental illness is misrepresented and there is stigma and misunderstanding. This does lead to negative stereotypes. Most mental health is managed in community by GP and individuals are well maintained

With your example, regard treatment, they need to want to engage in assessments or treatment planning

as an aside
being detained under MHA is a big deal, requiring 2 doctors and an AMHP allied mental health professional . As a principle the least restrictive option is generally adhered to,unless there is significant risk to self or others. No one is sectioned for a day. It was potentially an assessment and the individual was not deemed suitable to be detained eg sectioned

I wish you both well going forward. I hope you get the support you need
