Mirtazapine experiences?

The doctor just put me on this yesterday because I’ve tried and failed with a number of SSRIs. I took it last night and slept well for the first time in months but I do feel groggy this morning. Anyone else taken it?

I did for a short while. Had to come off of it because I felt hungover the next day constantly, or couldn’t wake up properly without a lot of caffeine. The sleep was grand, but it was having too much knock on effect with my young DC late to school etc.

I'm on fluoxetine now and that’s working a treat for me.

I am on 15 mg Mirtazapine. I sleep well most nights and my anxiety has disappeared so it's a win win for me. No grogginess at all but I am not sure whether it has contributed to a weight gain though. I am also on Citalopran and have been for a long time and GP wants me to stay on it as the combo apparently works better.

I’ve been on them for about 10 years . They still make me sleep very well ( I had severe sleeping problems before ) and they’ve helped with my anxiety. I haven’t had any side effects except feeling a bit numb but for me that’s a good thing .

Cookiesandbeans · 14/07/2023 12:52

Oh and yes it takes a while to get used to them . For me the grogginess lasted for about 4 weeks but I’m so glad I didn’t give up .

Thank you all for your responses, I will persevere! Just want something to work at this point.

@Cookiesandbeans how long did it take for you to see any improvement? Thank you .

Cookiesandbeans · 16/08/2023 08:39

@BMH73 It was a long time ago since I started to take them so I can’t remember exactly. It did take a long time think around 6-8 weeks. If you don’t see any improvement after 8 weeks I think it’s probably not the right medication for you . Best of luck !

Mirtazepine isn't an SSRI.

I like it. It takes the edge off my anxiety and works much better than Sertraline did. It does help with sleep and does give dry mouth.

I found initially when starting and when I upped the dose it made me really sleepy and ive had a few instances where it made me binge eat but overall I don't find I am over eating while taking it (I take at night before bed) and it has given me a quality of life back.

Only thing that worked for me! Off it 9 years now but it was the last anti-anxiety/ anti-depressant I needed. It did make me put on weight and had to take early evening to stop next day hangover but it got me from 3 hours sleep a night up to 8 (even when i stopped, routine was back). But if I needed something like this again, I'd happily take it (can't say the same for sertraline personally as felt weird and detached on that).

I think it's a wonderful drug and probably saved both my sanity and life following a traumatic bereavement. I did increase up to 45mg eventually and was able to come off after a couple of years with no problems whatsoever.
Sleep became so much better, the initial side effects of grogginess and dry mouth and the 'out of it' feeling only lasted a week or two.
The main drawback for me was it being an appetite stimulant. I was constantly hungry and thought about food from first thing in the morning! Subsequently I piled on around 3 stone in the first year ( and I was particularly slim so it was very noticeable.) At the time it was more important to treat my severe depression and anxiety than to worry about becoming overweight. The weight gain actually stopped after a year but I stayed at the increased weight while on the meds. After a couple of years and once over the worst of the trauma I came off them and lost the weight over the next year.
I can't take SSRI's as react to them

Sleep, glorious sleep! I’m annoyed at myself for not seeking help for anxiety years ago, lying awake all night when I could have been having lovely mirtazapine sleeps and a quiet brain all this time 🤦🏼‍♀️

I was on Mirtazapine and Citalopram but came off them about 2 to 3 months ago and this last 3 weeks been on Nortriptyline 2mg but I am still have bad IBS issues and my neck pain is back bad, I came off the Citalopram as I retired from work which was the root cause of my depression and also came off the Mirtazapine due to the weight gain which for me is nearly 3 stone and I couldnt handle it but I am getting to the point I wish I didnt come off it as this last month I am feel really awful. I have a GP appointment on Tuesday and was or am tempted to ask to go back on it, anyone can help me please.
