I need a new therapist.
I've had therapy before CBT, psychotherapy and birth trauma therapy.
I'm very self aware and feel I know exactly what I want and need to talk about but I'd also like to have some sort of regression to try and find out if I had any trauma in childhood. Can this be done by a general counselor or do I need to see someone specifically for that?
Also anyone who sees a therapist what do you expect to pay? I've been paying £45-£55 a session but someone said for a good one I should be paying £100....
Thanks x

I'm not sure "you get what you pay for" applies to counselling, but I pay £70/session if that helps. My therapist is very good (for me anyway!) I get a reduced rate tho as I'm a long-standing client, I think normal rate is £90.

I think shop around and ask questions before you commit to anyone - interview a bit to understand their experience of dealing by with what you want. A good therapist will tell you if they can't do it and refer you to someone else, a not so good one will claim to be able to heal any any every problem in the universe. Mine, for instance, does not specialise in relationship problems and so refers people to a colleague who does. He more does clinical problems eg bipolar, diagnosed depression/anxiety etc.

Why do you want to find out if you had a trauma in childhood if you are not aware of any as an adult?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/07/2023 18:51

Regression therapy is hypnosis and very specific - and not often done by UK registered therapists (I'm a psychotherapist)

I considered adding the training to my practice but I did not find training provided by ethical organisations (they are really dodgy the ones I've found) maybe it's more common in other countries - are you in the US?

@LaurieFairyCake - I'm a remedial hypnotist and wouldn't go near regression therapy. If there's something in the subconscious that it causing issues from childhood it's the adult mind that needs help, there's no value in going backwards.

You're unlikely to find anyone reputable or ethical that will agree to regression therapy. It does more harm than good.

As for styles I think it comes down to the therapist more than the modality they practice. I wouldn't have chosen existential therapy but that is what my therapist practices and so I get the best out of it I can and I find myself making progress.

We often have to find areas of compromise and sometime clash but I have a strong relationship with him and find that I get a lot out of that.

I'd say that as therapists charge what they want, then it's not true that the good ones are more money.

I agree with PP stick with here and now.

Have a read about internal family systems, and see if you like the sound of it, maybe read No Bad Parts. Could help you approach your exiles in the language of IFS. Or Attachment Informed EMDR could help you bridge back to memories that are causing disturbance in your life now.

I don't want to give my whole life story here but I basically don't have any memory of my childhood and teenage years. That, on top of my symptoms, leads me to think there may be something I'm missing. Are you able to help at all with my question? Thanks
