Hi, so I'm currently on 20mg of citalopram for anxiety and panic attacks they've been working great and have been on them for almost a year now, I do get bad days with my anxiety but normally it's the odd day or two then I feel back to normal. This past week I've had a horrendous time with my anxiety, struggling to breathe etc so I went to the doctors today (was worried it was something to do with my asthma) and he confirmed that I was hyperventilating, he said I need something to take the edge off short term so I can get back to normal as citalopram is long term. He has prescribed me 2mg of diazepam to take up to 2 times a day if I feel I need them but he said preferably only take 1 unless necessary, I've only got them for a week and hopefully by then my anxiety is calm and I'm back to normal. I basically just want to know anyone's experiences with them? And if they're likely to set my asthma off? (In case you can't tell I have horrendous health anxiety so this is stressing me out not knowing what they're like etc)

Sorry for the long post!!! TIA xx

I have used them on odd occasions and they have been ok (I don't have asthma so can't answer about that but they haven't caused any breathlessness for me.)
The dr has only given you a small number because they are addictive if taken for more than a week or so.

1mg is a tiny dose, so is 2, certainly wouldn’t worry about any prospect of addiction at that dose, it might just take the edge off the anxiety, citalopram generally works well,

I found propranolol more effective than diazepan but I have a high tolerance to meds.

Hope you're ok 🤗 I carry crochet or knitting to keep my anxiety down when I'm out. Anything to distract the brain

2mg is a tiny dose (I generally need 5mg for any effect at all) but also seem to run at a high tolerance.

I presume you have had this prescribed by a doctor who knows your medical history and asthma and they wouldn’t prescribe something that would be dangerous for you. You might even find your breathing feels easier as you relax a little more.

Don’t know about the asthma side of things but 2mg is a tiny dose. I’ve used D for hospital and dentist appointments in the past (due to extreme fear of even being in a hospital) and needed a few doses of 5mg over a period of 12 hours to get the effect I needed. They just take the edge off and they don’t make you feel drunk or anything like that. They wear off quickly.

Discuss with your doctor your worries about becoming addicted. Maybe s/he could try something else.
