Promethizine for sleep

Ive been prescribed promethizine for sleep by my GP after a week or two of sudden insomnia (I fall asleep but then wake after 30 mins or so and can’t get back to sleep) im trying everything - meditations / relaxing / routine etc etc.
I’m worried about taking it because even if it helps for one night won’t I be back in the same situation the next night or when I stop taking it?
Would be good to hear how others use it / if it works as a short term aid …

I feel your pain. I’ve tried all the sleeping tablets and will say that promethazine was probably the best for me and as it’s an antihistamine it is a good time of year to take it.

Your Dr is using the promethazine to cut the cycle of poor sleep, resetting you into a better pattern. It really can work.

For meditations try the Headspace app and their ‘sleep casts’. I really recommend it. If you’re nhs or student etc you can get a discount but it’s worth full price.

It’s only a “drowsy antihistamine”, not a sedative, so it’s a good first choice to try to reset your body clock / breaking your brain’s habit of waking 30 mins later… give it a good go, try not to worry about the what ifs, there will be a second and third + treatment to try if this doesn’t help.

Good luck 🍀

Thanks - how many days are you meant to take it for?

Whatever your GP has advised. Sominex on the shelves at Boots is the same thing, it’s not a powerful sleeping tablet or sedative so you can give it a good try.
