Anxiety - what medication?

Been a very very hard few weeks with deaths x 3, one was to suicide which shocked me to the core and then a series of arguments with dp over varying things. I feel I am at my lowest ebb, not depressed and no danger to myself but I have an app with my gp tomorrow.
Just wondering what I should expect in regards to meds for anxiety? I have all the symptoms and I think I have been dicing with it for quite some time just recent weeks seem to have snowballed. Also how soon does medication work and any other details you think would help.

I found propranolol to be really good for my anxiety. It takes away the physical symptoms like palpitations etc and just makes you feel a bit calmer! They work within the hour.
Other meds are like sertraline and citalopram which can take up to 3 months to work, so not instant results.. but some people get on quite well with them ☺️
Hope you're okay and the GP helps you tomorrow

I take propranolol and mirtazipine. They’ve both been life changing for me.

It is the palpitations and not being able to sleep properly that is the worst. I feel like I have been hit repeatedly in the chest and if it were a physical pain I could mask it with paracetamol however this is definitely anxiety.

Glad to hear some things can work fairly quickly as I need a 'quick hit' as it were. Even my face has gone red this evening from being anxious about things. I am overthinking so many things and so annoyed with dp so I have sent him to the other house with the kids for the night and home alone thankfully.

I took sertraline for a bout of depression some years ago but they were too strong for me. I felt like my tongue was a slug inside my mouth and they made me drowsy. I took myself off them.

Following with interest as my anxiety at the moment has gone through the roof. My negative and worrying thoughts come in waves, sometimes it is so bad it really is debilitating and when I look back, when I am feeling better, I think it was all silly. Currently having a wave at the moment 😔

Well I got given sertraline. I explained to the doctor what the issues were including the huge panic attack I took last night where I swore I was having a heart attack and I was given sympathy and a prescription. I have already taken one pill and bought a bottle of rescue remedy for the meantime although my heart was pouding earlier so much that I nearly drank the bottle in the tesco carpark.

I know I will be ok but this currently is a killer.

I'm on sertraline. I found it super helpful. I still have feelings but I can bounce back quicker and downy dwell on them. I'm able to eat exercise and do my housework again.

I agree with pp - mirtazepine and propranolol- for sleep and anxiety/ panic attacks. Both work immediately.

It is awful. Getting to see a doctor is awful where I am, I wish I could see one when I am at my lowest not in 3 weeks time when I am feeling better. Anxiety is crippling.

Pregabalin was a wonder medication for my anxiety and unlike antidepressants it works immediately. It is indicated for generalized anxiety disorder - I would suggest it’s worth discussing with GP.

I would also recommend counseling if you're going through Trauma. If you don't see a Therapist now, Google your local Licensed Therapist that deals with Trauma.

What a difference a week makes.

Last Friday I started the pills for 4 days of half a pill and up to a full one on Tuesday and although feeling a bit shakey and 'fluttery' is possibly the best way I can describe it for a few days I feel like a calm has come over me. Myself and DP took ourselves away from the kids overnight Saturday and just reconnected as a couple. I explained to him properly how I have been feeling and we ironed things out and had a lovely meal and night away and that has helped too as I have been taking my feelings out on him recently which has not been fair to him either.

I have actually slept well despite the meds this week. I say that as someone awake since 5am but I was in bed very early last night and I really feel energised today.

Long may this feeling last!

That's great sertraline is a very good drug. What mgs are you taking now.

Pseudonamed · 11/05/2023 19:42

@HeBeaverandSheBeaver I think 50 sorry no idea!

I am on week three and feeling a fluttery feeling today and feeling a bit down and I have no idea why as I have no reason to be down. Life is going great but I just have this feeling like I want to just go to bed.

Still early days. I found my dd Levelled out after a few weeks on the lower doses and seems lower. She wasn't but every time she was raised a dose she seemed to have a week or so of a high. Then it plateaued. Maybe that.

Pseudonamed · 11/05/2023 23:52

Thank you yes it could be as I feel fine this evening now but earlier just a bit of a low feeling. I still feel better than I did so for that I am grateful at least.

I find mindfulness distraction techniques to be good for panic attacks.
