Hi I have a work event next week which I am feeling super anxious about. I am waking at night in tears or shaking about this. I think this is because I had some sort of panic thing in the last one.

I have a private therapy appointment the week after but wondering if a gp can help.

I had something similar to this and was prescribed a very low dose of diazepam. Also been given propananol in the past, it's worth speaking to your gp and explaining how panicked you are. They are more likely to help if you've tried other methods (like you have) and are still struggling

Do you have to attend this work event? Is it a socialising event or something actually for work? Do you like your job in general?

When I was in a job I hated lots of things made me panicky. I left for a lower paid less stressful role .

Thanks will try speaking to the GP. In the moment I have tried using my apple watch mindfullness app for deep breathing, focussing on grounding techniques, counting patterns or things in the room drinking cold water. The problem is I physically shake and even if I.can get through it afterwards i feel shivery and tired but keep waking up shaking or crying.

Please cancel ‘the event’ and seek help. You are more important.

Its a work related away day and there is one specific part of the day I am.concerned about. If I knewe the questions we would be asked before I think I could probably cope.

The work environment is quite toxic for so many reasons. Speaking to the union, there are lots of people with concerns. I am actively looking for other roles however, while I will accept a pay cut the specialised nature of the role means it may take some time. My senior manager is very keen onaway days and quite connected in the industry.

Thanks I appreciate that rationally I should cancel but worry about affects on my.career. Also appreciate that it would be quite unfortunate but unavoidable if I got food poisoning on the day of the event.

I had a chat with my gp in November and we talked about maybe having a couple of weeks signed off. He also gave me the crisis number but the referral only lasted a month not sure where I should go if I get into the shaking state again. I know i haven't yet fallen appart completely but last time it was a few days before I could sleep without pannic.

Would it be ok to get a same day GP appointment on this. There is nothing bookable before mid May.

Hi OP please do contact your GP. As others have mentioned we can sometimes use meds short term to help patients with situational anxiety

Greensheep242 · 18/04/2023 19:32

Thanks will try.the fun of the 8 am dash for a GP call.

I think the thing I find the hardest is I have got pannicked that symptoms wont ever stop? Is there a point when a pannic attack should stop everything seems to suggest 15 minutesih but I have shaken for well over an hour only to stop and start again later.

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way, it's truly truly awful. I had a period of time where I was in a constant panicked state and would have panic attacks that seemed to last hours, some of the most intense ones would make me throw up. Long term anti anxiety medication helped me more than I ever thought it would and at the very beginning, short term meds helped me function and get my life back.

Greensheep242 · 19/04/2023 08:02

Thanks all for your support feel like i got really lucky and managed to get a call for this morning. Now struggling to think what to say over the phone.

Spoke to the GP they want more details of what is happening and to do some tests. In the meantime will prescribe some meds.

There's no rule says you can have only one panic attack (if that's what it is). You can have several in a day or have one after another for a while. The shaking might not be a panic attack but "just" high anxiety levels, enough to produce symptoms. I know you're worried about your career but if your MH is destroyed you won't have a career anyway, at least temporarily, and how would a career break affect your career long term? You're getting to the point where you've got nothing to lose by going off sick/leaving. Maybe you'd cope on longer term anxiety meds, the GP will advise.

Greensheep242 · 26/04/2023 03:55

Thanks the day wasn't as bad as I feared. Felt quite dizzy and headachy but not sure if propraninol or lack of sleep.

after the event I was bothered about I went to the toilet and was sick. I was probably shaking for about 30 minutes. As a lunch break managed to go outside and sat in the sun. Everyone was quite quiet in the afternoon with 2 out of 19 having gone home sick

I think going off would be useful but dont have confidence to do this without GP advise. The first time I can get an appointment is 18 May for a call requested by the GP after blood tests I had on a physical issue before easter. What I would really like is a week to try and get my sleep pattern siorted and have me time and then a couple of weeks with shorter days
