Could you claim for MH misdiagnosis?

If someone was diagnosed with depression aged 18 and given every different type of antidepressant under the sun (7 different types at least) until they were finally diagnosed with Autism aged 30. Could they claim against the misdiagnosis?

The only reason I would want to claim is that the antidepressants caused severe mental health problems and there was suicide attempts, it also severely effected quality of life. It even led to staying in abusive situations due to feeling “numb”.

Although it sounds impossible to prove I think and I would feel guilty if anyone got into trouble over it.

How can you prove you weren't depressed?

Polik · 11/04/2023 18:37

People with autism often also have depression.

I doubt it, tbh. I was diagnosed with depression at 14. Aged 51 I'm now just diagnosed with ADHD, psychosis, BPD, GAD and depression.

MH is a complicated thing.

Oh and I also had every known anti depressant and was hospitalised after countless suicide attempts.

Unless you can demonstrate negligence and a causal link you are unlikely to be successful. It also needs to be within 3 years of , or becoming aware of, an incident. Have you complained via pals?

Miloticc · 11/04/2023 19:04

Thanks for your replies! No I haven't tried complaining before

I pretty much agree with what everyone’s saying, I think I just feel angry for my younger self because I was given that diagnosis and meds with absolutely no consideration, just had pills thrown at me so that I would go away

I think it would be impossible to prove negligence by the looks of things, when I was going to the GP I wasn’t complaining of depression symptoms and spent years making repeat appointments saying “this isn’t what’s wrong with me”
