Hi all

My daughter has been prescribed this for a whole heap of isses but mainly OCD and anxiety,I have lots of other posts throughout the years of all her issues, the most recent being an eating disorder. . First time on medication fnally after we changed doctors and got to see a proper pschiatrist at long last.

She is now on it a full week and is still feeling quite nauseaus and dizzy but mentally, she seemed great after 2 days. However, today she is saying she feels nothing and no motivation to do anything. I am really worried. I know she was so depressed before but does anyone know if this is normal? I have tried googling but sometimes that just scares the life out of me.

Thanks in advance.

I was nauseous and dizzy for the first two to three weeks on fluoxetine. The positive effects began after about 3 weeks but yes it does take a while.

Hugs to you. Googling this is very scary but remember many many MANY people take AD's and its very rare to have an extreme reaction.

It's common to have some negative symptoms initially including ups and downs in mood. I would give her bucket loads of reassurance that how she's feeling is normal when taking a new med and she's doing really well. Keep a close eye and keep reminding her that the negative effects will change to positive ones soon. Do things that boost her mood (I'm sure you already are!) and ensure she's getting plenty of sleep and daylight and eats as well as she can with her ED. I hope she's feeling better soon x

Thank so much for the replies. Yes we make sure she has some breakfast before taking it but then she has little or no appetite for the rest of the day. She is drinking lots though.

Yes I have explained that it is all perfectly normal to her and I spoke to doctor yesterday who sid to give it a another week or 2 and stick it out.

Good to know though that it is all perfectly normal so lets hope they work.

Thans again

Fluxotine changed my life for the better but I felt a bit off on it for a couple of weeks. I'd stick with it.

Also to add that I very nearly gave up and almost stopped taking the tablets as I felt so rough. But I persevered and it was so worth it for me.

I’ve been taking fluoxetine for a week now and I haven’t felt an improvement yet just some not so nice side effects but from what I’ve read it takes a few weeks to work. Hopefully your daughter will feel better soon.

Just wanted to reply with a hug to you.

My DS (17) is on fluoxetine and I remember the actual fear as I was told all the side effects to look out for in the first couple of weeks.

If it gives you any hope he has been on them since January and is feeling better. Not perfect, but compared to 3 months ago there is a big difference.

Just keep talking to her x

Thank you so much. Was your DS sick at all on them and if so, did that ease? She is still feeling sick and dizzy.

What dose is she on? It's possible she could switch to a lower dose to get used to it.

MarthaJonesPhone · 30/03/2023 13:50

My 10 year old DS is on 2.5 ml of fluoxetine, it's changed his life. He's tried a higher dose but it had unpleasant side effects. I would see about a lower dose.

20mg.So quite a low dose as it is. Going to give it another few days and see.

That's quite high for a starter I think. My DC started on 5 and then up to 10 then 20.

Oh Really? I didn't kow 20 was high as I think the dosage can go up to 80. She has an appoinment next week with the pschiatrist next so I will say it to them then. The doctor was not overly worried but I hate seeing her so sick on top of everything else.

Thank you so much for your reply. This has brought me some comfort as we debated for a while if medication was the route to go.

@Snuggleworm he hasn't been too bad with sickness to be fair. I'm on Setraline and had horrendous feelings of sickness when I first started, then upped my dose. Everyone reacts differently, and it should die down.

If it doesn't then it's best for. trip back to the GP to see if there is another she can try. I was on citalapram and had to change because I had awful panic attacks on them.
