hi parent
im a father of 4 year old boy
The point of this post is to share my story of my sons speech delay and how his father got severe clinical depression(please dont judje me):

my dear son wasnt saying a word until his 3rd bday
to find out whats wrong i went to forums, youtubes and other "sources of information"
more ive been looking for an answer there-- more ive been getting conveinced that something wrong with him
oh yeah -red flags,milestones-thats the special ones which dropped me into depression
hand flapping, non verbal, not reacting to his name ,fussy eater, not pointing, not always following commands and etc, ofcorse he had all of those.
and second child is about to enter this world
im freaking out on heavy antidepressats
at that point im 100% sure my son has autism (or somewhere there) even after visit to developmental pediatrician i didnt change my mind when he said to me my son has no autistic traits(son at that time2.5yo)
we started salt and macathon at age 2(he still remember some signs actually)

then all of the sudden when i comletely lost my hope to ever hear him saying papa to me he started talking!!!!!!!!!!!!!hes speech started when we send him to preschool Montessori !!
first it was just first letter of the word or half of the word, then by 40 month there was first sentences!!!!!

skip to nowadays
HES VOCABULARY WAY BETTER THEN MINE NOW
sometimes he corrects me when i saying/pronouncing something wrong
He is 4 year old going to school next year
thats all

MORAL OF THE STORY:
DEAR PARENT DO NOT LOOK FOR ANSWERS IN INTERNET
p.s. second child is my daughter who 1.5 now total chatterbox (i guess thats true that girls developing faster)
and sorry for my english spelling

Stories like this are refreshing to hear.

How did you get your son to respond to his name?

artemru · 14/03/2023 06:33

Idk exactly how but around 2.5 he started to respond to his name
at age of 2 he has no response it was really frustrating

All children develop at different times, but as parents we do worry. My first DC didn’t speak at 2, health visitor was very concerned, turns out we were doing everything for him so he didn’t need to speak. By 2.5 held a long conversation with Health Visitor over the phone.

I’m so glad your child is fine
all the best to you and your family

How did things turn out?

Always look for the obvious before going down the Dr Google route. Intermittent hearing loss is very common in young children, the inner ear is a very complex mechanism, and not fully developed until later childhood, so ear infections often do not clear away as they do with older children and adults, leading to blockage ( glue ear). Really important to get this diagnosed , as missing out on language development at an early stage can have long term issues.

Pleased the OPs child is doing so well.
