Is it okay to stay on mirtazapine for a few years?

I've been on them for 2 years, have tried a few days off, but heightened anxiety again. Has anyone been on them for a few years?

I’ve been an antidepressants for years. I took mirtazapine for a while, but the side effects were too much, (excessive sleepiness).

I have in the past switched from one brand to another without problems.

I believe Mitazapine is one of the older A/Ds, I thought it was used if the others didn’t seem to work.

Ive also heard that reducing them and getting anxiety/depression can be actually be the withdrawal symptoms, not the original problem coming back. But it’s obviously very hard to tell which it is.

I think you should discuss all this with your doctor.

Best of luck.

I’ve been on mirtazapine for 17 months now. I started on 7.5 and slowly worked up to 30 mg. The biggest plus has been sleep as I’ve struggled with sleep all my adult life. I take it in split doses, 7.5 just before sleep and the remaining 22.5 at about 2.30 am when I wake for a wee. (I use a pill cutter bought in Boots)
I am in my late 50s and on HRT which sorted out all my meno symptoms except sleep, anxiety and depression.
Mirt has helped my anxiety and depression but I, too wonder when I should come if it.

I've decided to stay on them for the moment. Will try again maybe in another few months.

I've been on 30mg mirtazipine for about 7yrs, after trying just about every other anti depressant these are the only ones that do anything. I don't notice any side effects at all now but when I missed my prescription last yr, I realised I do still need them. I could not sleep & after about a fortnight I started to get really down again so they definitely do something.
In short yeah they're the only ones I've been able to stay on long term.
