Obsessive thinking

This is new for me - the last few months maybe. An issue will come up, it will consume my thoughts, I will think about it from every angle, talk about it with anyone who will listen and it will then fade away. Normally takes a week/10 days. It will then be replaced by another issue and the cycle repeats. It's exhausting. It's not normally work related. Can anyone empathise?

Hi OP.

me. I had this for years with health anxiety. I wish I could say there was a quick fix but for me I had to go to therapy and learn how to stop fixating on issues that weren’t there.

if you can speak to your GP/therapist I would definitely recommend it!

good luck 💐

I have this. It’s something I’ve always had. It’s painful, stuff gets out of proportion.

What I try to do is to remember that it will be replaced by something else and reason to myself that it therefore can’t be bothering me in a real sense….

The other thing is to not try to stop the thoughts, but sort of put them over to one side of your mind and let them whir away while you do something else.

I hope that makes some sense?

Hell yeah and it's bloody exhausting.

Currently obsessing over a conversation I had at work on Wednesday where I worded something badly , came across too harsh and they overreacted we both apologies and cracked on . Any other person would have forgotten by now ( I don't talk about it really though)

I can keep going over it to the worst possible outcome until I realise I'm being ridiculous.

Distract myself best I can.

I do have propranolol if I'm getting too worked up

CBT helped for a while but I can feel myself slipping back into old habits.

Exercise and getting out in the fresh air also helps I find.

I self referred to mind matters last time.

Sorry meant to say mine is definitely linked to hormones the absolute worst days a 2 days before a period.

Could yours be hormone related if only started recently? Maybe a chat with GP?

MysweetAudrina · 17/02/2023 20:03

Just started taking hrt in the hope that it will ease these thoughts. I'm 48 and think it might be hormone related for me but not not sure yet.

Yes! I overthink everything and it’s emotionally mentally and physically draining. I don’t think people can understand unless they’ve been there. I started watching Physical with Rose Byrne and she’s constantly overthinking.

I have this, I was diagnosed with BPD which makes sense. I'm on Sertraline, newly started this and it's helped massively as well as seeing someone to manage my ways if thinking and how to handle certain situations. I tend to avoid people now to prevent the emotional cycle of fixation.

I have something similar with health anxiety. When a worry about some health issue is over, I have a few days of peace and it starts again with something else. It can be debilitating. I got pills for that and they helped a lot. I had to quit them due to weight gain, though. But for a month, I lived in peace! Unfortunately, my GP is against that type of medication and claims it will only make the problem worse so she won't prescribe me another type of pill, she says exercise and a healthy diet can help and that's it. If you have a good GP, ask about solutions, you will live better.
