ADHD in adults. How do they test for it?

I've put this under mental health as I couldn't find an option for ADHD.
Just wondering if anyone knows how they test/asses for ADHD in adults please?

There are questionnaires which are completed by the patient, and preferably, a member of their family, to show that the effects have been present since childhood.

It's then interview based.

I'm on the waiting list.

My son is recently diagnosed. They sent questionnaires for him to fill in and took a developmental history. They also looked at other things in his medical history (eg he has dyspraxia).
Then there was a video interview which took about an hour. It was quite intense for him as he struggles to concentrate for that amount of time but the doctor spoke with both of us.
He was given his diagnosis there and then and offered medication and psychosocial support.

I had a questionnaire to fill in myself, and provided all my old school reports from Nursery up until last year (thankfully my dad saved them) and the two other people had fill in a questionnaire, someone who was in my day to day life now (my partner at the time) and another person who had known me since childhood (my dad).

I then had a very lengthy assessment appt with the psychiatrist where he asked me lots and lots of questions and diagnosed me at the end.

There's a Neurodiverse Mumsnetters board which you might find useful.

Do you know how long left you have to wait? I have my first appointment (not assessment) next week. After nearly a year

Update - I got my ADHD diagnosis last month!! My whole life makes sense!

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 16/07/2024 20:33

I was diagnosed last week with combined ADHD.

I used ADHD 360 and from beginning to end, I think I began the process in April/May this year.

I’ve heard the reviews aren’t so good but I did not read them first (I haven’t still).
My friend told me about them so I looked them up and the rest is history with a great result in good time.

It’s still classed as nhs, so free with the exception of medication (if you pay for prescriptions).

Worth a look if nothing else.

Good luck! x

My dd 26 was diagnosed privately yesterday, but I'm suspicious as it seemed to be a very quick process which I understand it usually isn't. She was given medication and I'm uneasy about it.

How long did it take for her diagnoses ?
How does she feel herself about the medication and how is she getting on with it?
I loved my medication (I was petrified of taking it at first) it was life changing. But they took it away from me until i see another doctor about my suspected pots.

It depends who you go to, so make sure it’s good standard.

It should consist of questionnaires you complete and your parents or someone significant from childhood completes, school reports are asked for, then further testing and a face to face assessment.

Usually the build up is what takes it’s time and over the time the bulk of the information needed is asked for so the final assessment can seem quite quick, but a lot of information has already been received and is used for an diagnostic.

GlossyChipmonk · 20/07/2024 21:54

I am uneasy at how some private diagnoses are being handed out.

I do not doubt there is a huge amount of under diagnosis in women in particular, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it is later discovered there are some unscrupulous private practitioners who are profiteering. Big Pharma stand to benefit too.

It only took 4 sessions to get her diagnosis. She hasn't picked up the medication yet but is hopeful that it will help her in so many ways. She tells me it's non addictive. She smokes weed sometimes and admits she's been told it's incompatible with weed.
