How do we access CBT for when IAPT won’t help any more?

I need help to arrange therapy for my DC but I’ve no idea where to begin.

We are at a bit of a crisis point. They were having CBT and felt it was helping but their set amount of sessions ended and no more are available from Talking Therapies. They have anxiety and panic attacks and appear to now have depression. GP thinks ASD but they will not engage with assessment/diagnosis.

I have no idea how to help. There is also a life change on the horizon (eviction/enforced move) and I think it may tip them over the edge. I am terrified and feel so helpless. Please can anybody point me in the right direction for where to even start?

Have a chat with Therese Langford from www.facebook.com/calmmindhypnotherapy - she specialises in helping children with anxiety; she offers a free initial consultation for the parent(s).

Hi OP is your DC a child or an adult? There are different pathways to access NHS mental health services depending on their age.

NeedHelpForDC · 30/01/2023 12:20

Sorry, I should have said - DC is an adult.

Thank you for replying.

How old is your child - are they under 25? Asking because there are some age-specific resources that they could access if aged 18-25

NeedHelpForDC · 30/01/2023 13:21

Yes, under 25. Thank you.

He could have a look at this online course;

www.udemy.com/course/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-online-course-cbt-practitioner-course/

It's incredibly comprehensive and well presented. Don't worry about the "practitioner" label - a lot of people do it for self awareness.

NeedHelpForDC · 30/01/2023 13:38

Thank you, I’ll look at that with her.

CBT teaches skills that your DC will still have to practice long after the sessions have ended. Are they still practicing what they have been taught?

NeedHelpForDC · 30/01/2023 21:20

To an extent but they don’t feel they got through all they needed in the allocated sessions. Plus the final session has never actually happened.
