Daughter's extreme emetophobia

My teenage daughter has extreme emetophobia. She is receiving CAMHS support which has helped in the past. However, the progress is slow and it feels like she's gone backwards in last few weeks. Has anyone tried any other therapies/approaches that have helped please? We are both desperate.

My dd had private therapy with a clinical psychologist and did cbt emdr and exposure therapy

She is much better now tho it's still a little effecting her at times but on the whole it's had a good outcome.

Best of luck. I had awful emetophobia in my teens and early twenties so I know how debilitating it can be.
I never received any formal mental health support, so can't advise on specific therapies.
I found the following helpful though:

  • learning generally about mental health, the science behind it
  • building a lot of rest into my day (to recover from panic attacks)
  • deciding which triggers were a priority to deal with (for example, only recently and when living a fairly emetophobia - free life have I been able to eat meat, but when I was in the thick of it I managed to sit in lecture theatres and socialize with people who were unwell even though they caused me a lot of anxiety)
  • bringing in general anxiety-helping things such as exercise, socialising , getting fresh air. Those things were often hard to do because of my phobia, but ultimately my fondest memories of that time in my life are going on long walks with my family at weekends

Thank you. I'm not sure if the approach her MH nurse is taking is CBT based- I think it is. I need to speak to her in a bit more depth about her plans moving forward I think. I'm very interested in trying EMDR but don't want to go against anything she's working on with CAMHS. Any useful books anyone can recommend please?

Emetophobia responds very well to remedial hypnosis. Why? Because it's something that's developed in the subconscious mind, either over time or from a single incident. Happy to send a list of Control System practitioners who can help. If your daughter is a young teen then talk to Therese Langford.

Hello, so sorry to hear of her illness. I also have extreme emetophobia although it is now controlled after a very long hospital stay in which I had ERP.

This is a fantastic book by David Veale, who is the UK's emet specialist.

If you can afford private ERP, I can recommend the therapists at Overcoming OCD who changed my life, they all worked at The Priory's OCD unit so are very experienced.
