Will the gp prescribe me sertraline for this situation?

So I've suffered from quite bad anxiety for 20 years. Used to be quite bad with panic attacks etc but I manage it quite well now & have never taken medication.
My partner has spent the last year very poorly with a newly diagnosed mental health condition which is quite serious, requires high strength medication and a lot of involvement from outside agencies.
He has been off work for a very long time and hasn't really been functioning at all. Just watches TV all day.
This has been very hard for me to cope with. I have noone to support me because he didn't want anyone to know what had happened. We had some extremely stressful times when he was at his worst suffering from paranoia, Delusions, suicidal etc. I really think this has left me with some kind of ptsd.
Things are calming down now and life returning to normal. But I feel so stressed all the time. My body feels on edge constantly. I struggle to fall asleep. I'm worrying alot about things and generally just feel really really stressed.
Husband was given this anti depressant at the start and it worked wonderfully. I would like to think it could help me to try and calm my nerves, make me less anxious.
I've booked a gp appointment to talk about it. Is this the right medication to ask for in this situation?

I’m sorry to hear about your situation and I’m glad you’re asking for help. Sit down and discuss with your GP your symptoms and what’s going on at home and they’ll look at the correct medication options for you based on your past medical history , current health etc. Be mindful it can sometimes be trial and error to find the medication that works best for you but you’ve made the important step to check in with your GP. I find it helpful when patients come to me with a list of symptoms or concerns they have as it helps me to make sure I ask the right questions (I am not a GP) This might be useful for you. Or bring a screenshot of your concerns here.
Non pharmaceutical interventions may be discussed to adjunct your medication too which may be helpful as you mentioned you’ve no one to talk to in real life.
I hope all goes well for you. You’ve done so well looking after your DH and now it’s time to focus on yourself.

Yes I would imagine they would. Don't specifically ask for sertraline though as different antidepressants work for different people/situations and the GP will decide what to give you. For example I went to GP with anxiety a few years ago but mentioned trouble sleeping so they gave me citalopram as it tends to be more sedating/helps with sleep more than sertraline. It works great for me.
Good luck, I hope you find something to help you.
