Coming off mirtazpine

Hi,

has anyone come off mirtazpine cold turkey? I haven’t take any for 5 days completely stopped as I can’t get to speak to a GP anymore, I feel so sick I can’t eat I feel awful. I refuse to go back on these I have put on 3 stone and the medication was making me so hungry, sluggish and I couldn’t wake up in the morning. Does anyone have any advice on how I can ease the withdrawal period & if anyone has how long did it take?

thanks

@Allyxxx how are you getting on withdrawing from mirtazapine? Did you do it cold turkey or try and withdraw slower? I'm currently on mirtazapine but also starting on sertraline and when I'm established on that will hopefully be able to stop mirtazapine

Hi @SameKeyThough. i am currently on day 13 of cold turkey, it’s been really really hard but I have gone cold turkey completely with nothing else to take. I’ve lost 15lb’s in 13 days constant nausea & sweats it hasn’t been smooth but I can see the wood from the trees at the moment I am slowly getting better I have no appetite but I’m hoping that will slowly start to come back. I would advise tapering down it’ll probably would’ve been better but I hated these meds and wanted out so just done it that way: if you do go cold Turkey I would advise adjusting the following two weeks if you work or anything maybe take some time off - I wish I did.

Wow @Allyxxx you are obviously made of tough stuff! Well done for getting through it, hopefully you are over the worst. Have you had side effects like anxiety or depression or has it mostly been physical side effects? I'll be tapering slowly I think when I do it but it's the anxiety returning that worries me.

Hi, @SameKeyThough thank you. I am on day 17 and I have no symptoms now slightly feel sick when I wake up but it goes after 15 minutes or so. I’m glad I managed it as it was very tough and some days I wanted to just take one to make it stop but glad I pushed through. Strangely enough I feel less anxious, I felt irritable on mirtizapine as I was always hungry, and I think it is also possible to have TOO much sleep as well as TOO little. I feel a lot better which I’m really surprised at as I read horror stories about withdrawal. I did speak with my GP last week just to inform them and they did say I should have tapered of but it won’t cause any physical damage just as you said anxiety symptoms may come back. If you do suffer with bad anxiety I would suggest tapering off just in case, do what’s best for you & your situation - we are all different 😊

I went from 45mg to 30mg I lasted 6 months then had to go back to 45mg as I couldn't do it Any longer I was just constantly crying weird feeling in my head and sweats been back on 45 for 2 months and feel much better not everyone gets effects for reducing but for me just reducing down was a nightmare I wouldn't recommend going cold turkey from mirtazapine it's tough.
