For anyone who's suffering from depression - does it run in your family?

I'm beginning to get worried as a lot of my family suffer from mental illness. I somehow feel that it's inevitable and that I will become depressed/schizonphrenic. Or it could just be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Any views on this?

even if both parents had schizophrenia do you have a 40% chance of developing it.

So that means even with both parents having it and raising you (so nature as well as nurture in play here) you have a 60% chance of not developing it.

In my opinion it is very much nurture and not nature - ie. how you were raised, what coping strategies you were taught, how you were loved and parented.

So, it's not inevitable genetically but if you're feeling depressed, disconnected it would be a goo time to recognise this and put in some support to help you

I am the same. My Mum , Dad and sister all have long term depression of varying degrees and live on anti- depressants. My Grandad was very ill with depression. I have a very positive outlook and take care of my stress levels and happiness( something my mums counsellor told her to do ).

I would say it is a self fulfilling prophecy and that if you take care of yourself you cna avoid depression as I have.
Of course that makes if sound very simple and I know it is not.
