I've found a couple of threads over the last couple of years, but no one seems to have taken this!

Are you still taking this/ did you take it in the end?

Any thoughts, or experiences gratefully received.

Hi @lborgia

Yes I have been taking Valdoxan now since 2016.
I'm definitely better with it than without it, though I don't feel it's very strong. It was suggested for me as I can't take meds that act on serotonin because they make me very shaky. I'm on the slightly unconventional dose of 1.5 tablets (37.5mg).
It helps me fall asleep which is a massive plus. I'm not aware of any side effects, although I'm on a lot of other medication.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for coming back - that’s really helpful.

I will give them a go. I am already taking an SSRI, but this is supposed to make all the difference. We’ll see!

I get my prescription sent from my CPN to my gp to prescribe. My gp practice have refused to prescribe valdoxan as they say its not allowed in my age group (40s). I also don't have any of the risk factors that would deny me it.
Stuck.

lborgia · 15/10/2022 05:06

@Torvean - that sounds completely ridiculous. If the CPN feels competent to prescribe, I’ve no idea why your GP won’t help. I wonder if it’s particularly expensive? Maybe it’s a strain on their budget.

Call me cynical, but these days there’s a lot that goes on for financial reasons rather than clinical.

I can't think why it wouldn't be allowed in your 40s - seems pretty random. I was 49 when I started it. Liver problems are a contra-indication and AST/ALT tests are recommended when on this medication (6 monthly once established on it).

I'm not on the NHS and I (or rather my health insurance) pay for medication at the actual local cost. My generic Valdoxan is 15€ for a box of 28, plus a small dispensing fee (about €1.50). Not much higher than the cost of an NHS prescription I believe, so not especially uneconomical?

I have no idea why they refused. I live in Scotland so no prescription fees. They've just stared me on Vortioxetine instead so will see what happens.

I hope Volaxan works for those of you on it.
