Adult diagnosis of bipolar/autism/aspergers

Does anyone know how to go about this?

I am pretty sure I'm something and it's really affecting me now so I'd like to know and then target some appropriate therapies. I feel a need to understand myself.

Any advice on where to turn would be helpful.

Aspergers isn't diagnosed any more, everyone is lumped into autistic I believe. Autism and bipolar are very different. Bipolar is a mood disorder where you cycle between elevated and depressed moods over days/weeks/months. Autism is an issue with social communication ie you might talk over people or take things literally - social interaction ie you might not make eye contact or might not be able to read expressions and social imagination ie you might not be able to put yourself in other peoples shoes. Having anxiety and sensory issues are also common.
What issues do you have?

Oh my advice would be to read up on both and then speak to your GP about it.

I was diagnosed with ASD (previously aspergers) last year. I paid almost £2k for a private assessment.

@Choconut

Thanks for that clear post. Autism. That's me to a t.

Asperger's isn't a separate diagnosis anymore, comes under the ASD umbrella

But I'm a bit confused as to why you think it's autism or bipolar, as they're extremely different

All the things you say. Plus I feel I don't fit. Socially very awkward so I go through life "role playing". Highly anxious and panic attacks. Find working with extreme personalities the opposite of me stressful.

@candycaneframe

Because I didn't know tbh. I get times I feel high and am currently very very low. But it can be quite a fast change .

From the description I think its autism

I'd be conscious of not diagnosing yourself, some people are just outliers in society with no reason behind it.

I'd speak to your GP, but be warned wait lists for adult diagnosis is long (think 3 years) or explore a private diagnosis

Thanks.

I've felt odd for forever. It's been worse since I lost my Mum earlier this year. Like grief has made my issues more obvious? Or maybe it's just stress on top.

I'll mention it to my Dr and see what the suggestion is.

Thank you everyone
