You need to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist so your GP will write a referral. You can also ask the Clinic for Dissociative Studies to assess you and I believe that is by self referral.

My diagnosis took about 3 years; has been confirmed by three different people. Do you need a diagnosis though? Because it's a really shit diagnosis to have on your records so if it wasn't essential to be diagnosed, then I would honestly not go down that route.

My diagnosis was a bit different as I was in a room being videoed for two weeks, then I had about two years of therapy, then some interview style questions, and a lot of forms about experiences.

Weigh up the benefits of being diagnosed versus the negatives, because in my experience there's little to no help for the aftermath.

I was diagnosed when I had a breakdown and went into hospital. The psychologist in there diagnosed me. The psychiatrist just wanted to push meds and wasn't interested in getting to the root of the problem.

I believed the psychologist that there would be long-term help but as soon as I was out of the hospital they couldn't wait to get me off their books. I'm not eligible for any further help.

If you still want a diagnosis then my advice would be to see your gp and ask for a psychology referral not a psychiatrist.
