Hey everyone
wasn’t sure exactly where to post this but thought mental health was probably best.
just wondering if anyone has successfully overcome emetaphobia and if so, how?

i’ve bad this phobia for as long as I can remember, and it has a huge impact on my day to day life. It’s affected my career choices, my decision on having children, where I will go, what foods I will eat etc etc etc

i had hypnotherapy as a child which did nothing
I’ve had counselling

im just at a complete loss, I know it’s all irrational but that doesn’t make it any easier

In a nutshell. No. Nothing has helped me. 😟

Tell me about it.
‘We didn’t go on a holiday which dh and the children would’ve loved because I won’t go on ferries.

I wouldn't say I was cured, but it's got about 75% better after having kids (especially the past year with us getting four puke bugs). Still there though and it really does get in the way of my life if I don't get a grip on it. CBT didn't help at all, hypnotherapy helped a bit, also one of my therapists loaned me a book called The Linden Method and that actually helped a lot, as emetophobia is the basis for me having massive periods of anxiety and frequent panic attacks at various points in my life. Hope you find something to help you cope OP, it's really horrible.

I think cbt has the best evidence base. Inevitably it won't help everyone, and therapists are variable so may depend who you see, but definitely worth trying. Good luck

Hypnosis is proven to be very successful at dealing with phobias.

My DD(12) has emetophobia.

She has gone from being absolutely and totally crippled by it (unable to leave the house, unable to attend school) to living pretty much a normal life within 6 months through exposure therapy.

It was very, very challenging but she worked so hard at it.

We followed Ken Goodman's book which I would recommend 1000%.

Disgruntledpelicanlady · 22/09/2022 12:04

I'd say 90% cured
I worked through the 'Cure your emetophobia and thrive' workbook years back which really helped.
A career with kids has worked as exposure therapy too.

EMDR helped a tiny bit with intrusive thoughts. The problem is that mine was caused by a traumatic incident and then was compounded by several more over my childhood so I've basically got no chance. It's terrible and affects all my daily decisions. During the lockdowns I felt so free 😔

Literally this. I will still change my behaviour around people who are extremely drunk/mention having had a sick bug recently/feel sick, and I am very twitchy if the DC say they're feeling queasy, but there is an element of just having to get on with it. My anxiety around eating out has improved as a result of this too.

Mine has seen some improvement from CBT through IAPT on the NHS. But it’s still there to some extent. Like others have said having kids has helped as you have no choice really to face your fears!

ERP has made a huge difference to my life but it's still pretty tough a lot of the times, I would really recommend it though as it's much more manageable now.

This book is great, written by the uk's expert on emet (professor David Veale).

I do get it- there is not one corner of my life that doesn't get/hasn't been impacted by my emet. It rules my life, and that of my family. I spent 9 months in an OCD/emet program in hospital undergoing CBT/ERP.
