Sertraline or fluoxetine?

Has anyone tried both and which did you find best for anxiety?

I tried citalopram and it did nothing for me and gave me migraines.

I took sertraline for over a year and it definitely helped but I put on nearly a stone. I cut down from 100 - 50 and then every other day, every few days etc and I've not taken any for about 5 weeks and my symptoms are back. I still have some sertraline so I could just start taking it again but I don't want to put on any more weight and I'd hoped I wouldn't need to take meds long term...

Is it worth trying fluoxetine instead or are they much the same? Or would beta blockers be an idea for when symptoms flare up? I will be trying to get a drs appointment/phonecall asap but who knows how long that will take so just looking for others' experiences in the meantime. Thanks

Did your GP say to come of them? If not it would be because you weren’t ready and now your symptoms are back! We all at some point think we’re getting through the shit and maybe I’m ready to not take/reduce my meds but the GP knows best IMO

@Idontthink gp was happy for me to cut down and then go every other day etc. I wanted to try without but clearly not going to work. My question is though do I go back to sertraline and probably gain more weight or is fluoxetine just as good/better and does it also cause weight gain?

Fluexotine was the only AD that worked well for me - with no side effects. I found it easy to wean off when the time came, too

Not tried any others but fluoxetine has been wonderful for me.

Does fluoxetine help with pmdd? I found sertraline helped with general issues but I still got bad pms/pmdd every month!

Everyone’s body chemistry is unique so this isn’t really a question you can get useful answers to from other people, unfortunately. It’s ultimately between you and your GP.

Personally, I do okay on sertraline. It did initially lead to slight weight gain but I adjusted my eating and exercise a bit to compensate and now I’m active and a good weight again.

I’m sorry your symptoms have returned, it’s crap when you think you’ve kicked it and it comes back. Flowers I hope you work out the best way forward soon.

Sertraline was great to start with but I ended up on max dose wasn't doing anything, same with mirtazapine. Just started fluexitine 3rd day, really don't like it, hard to sleep, mind racing at night, felt nausea. I hope it gets better anyone with any advice would be much appreciated. Op hope you're able to get what's right for you.

I have fluoxetine for anxiety disorder and PMDD. I could be wrong but I think for the latter it’s prescribed ‘off-label’ (I may have that wrong).

It has been brilliant. It doesn’t stop me worrying - I still have negative thoughts and worries but it stops them from spiralling into fear and panic. I feel much calmer even at the wrong time of the month.

As for weight - I am very overweight and I have actually lost weight over the year I have been on them. I think that this is mainly due to a reduction in comfort/hormonal eating caused by PMDD.

I take 20mg a day - a low dose.
