Do they help and advise you or just listen to you?

I've had a few over the years. When I had CBT the counsellor went through tools and techniques that she wanted me to try. Other counsellors have sort of reframed things and said them back to me in a clearer way or pointed out connections rather than actually adding much if you see what I mean.

When I went he made me start to see the logic in situations I have no control over
my mother had baby which died before me and always felt like she only had me because the other baby died.
logically yes it could be true I never asked her BUT I am not responsible for the way she feels/acts towards me because of the way she feels about losing that baby

when I’ve been they tend to give advised on how to cope and think about situations, so you start to learn how to figure out difficult situations. I think if you did ask for advice about something specific they would probably offer some

Thanks everyone. A few people have suggested I try counselling but I'm at a stage where sound advice is needed. I need to take my ex to court over my child but can't take the risk on spending thousands I don't have not to get the outcome we need.

Counsellors don’t ‘just’ listen, but don’t specifically advise you on solutions to your problems either. They will give you tools and techniques as ways of reframing so you can learn how to work out solutions to your problems yourself, and support you in that. If you want specific advice on what to do re: taking your ex to court, it doesn’t sound like a counsellor is what you need.

It sounds to me as though you need legal advice which can explain what options are available to you, what steps each of those would involve and give you an idea of the chances of success with each of those as well as the costs.

No counsellor will advise on legal matters. Try citizens advice bureau? Or MN legal board?
