How to tackle hoarding issue with my mum?

Anyone any advice tips on hoarders?

So basically a couple of years ago my mum said she wanted to start selling some of her old vintage items on eBay, she's no good with the technical side of things but would send me the pictures and I'd list them for her.

So we sold maybe 20 odd things.
Then she would go buy things from the market to sell.
And it's just escalated from there.
Her house, every room, is full of clothes.
I tell her to stop buying things so we can get rid of what she has first, she always agrees but it's like she can't help herself.

She used to be such a house proud/clean women, now I can't even visit with my children because there's no where to sit.

She doesn't see she has a problem.

Any help/ suggestions?

Until she realises there's a problem there's very little you can do, although you might talk to your local fire station and ask them if they'd do a risk assessment visit - it might open her eyes to the danger she'd be in if there was a fire (or if the property is at risk from the weight of the hoarding.

Check out the programme Hoarders. There's potentially some good tips you could take from there that can make loved ones realise the impact they are having on family and how to let go. It's a psychological disorder that needs careful management. It's much to do with holding onto memories of earlier, happiest life. So it's not easy.

where i worked there was a support group run by a psychologist for hoarders and their families maybe there's something similar where you are? thevCMHT community mental health team could tell you if one exists near you.
i agree it's a serious psychological issue and needs very careful handling.
good luck
