I want to go on Quetiapene

I have been on Mirtazipine for ages, it has made me really fat and I don't think it's helped my depression. I really want to try Quetiapene but my GP says he can't prescribe it and I have now been discharged from CMHT. I entered a study and I wasn't eligible to take part in the end but the psychiatrist leading the study said it was unlikely that I could be prescribed both, so have almost weaned myself of the Mirtazipine. He kept saying I could try duloxetine but I don't think I need antidepressants I think I need a mood stabiliser. The waiting list is ridiculously long for CMHT. Would a private psychiatrist prescribe it? I have no experience of private doctors, only private talking therapies. THANKS X

Why? It’s horrible. Do you have a mood disorder? It’s a very powerful anti psychotic and very heavily sedating. And it also causes massive weight gain so not sure it will be much different to the mirtazapine (I’ve had both).

Quetiapine is not indicated for treatment of depression unless you have psychotic symptoms or a bipolar diagnosis

As above I am not sure why you would actively want to take it

I can't imagine any GP or psychiatrist (NHS or private) would prescribe it just because you want to try it

Not true.
I take it and have neither of those things. Did put on 6 stone though.

I think I have a mood disorder and CTPSD which hits me in waves as well as regular depression. So I think that it would help with "levelling me out" so I'm not really, really happy one minute then suicidal ideation the next. It is totally exhausting both for me and for people around me. That is why I want to try it.

This.

I put on 2 stone in 3 months. Everyone one i know put on tonnes of weight. I was lucky.

Made me almost incoherent.

Who knows if it prevented a psychotic episode.

I really wouldn't go there

For someone bothered about weight gain, it's certainly not the medication I'd choose. Even if you're determined to try an antipsychotic, there are ones out there with a far better metabolic profile. But you really need to be seeing a psychiatrist for more specialist medications

I take it and have not experienced weight gain. It can be prescribed off label, as when I started taking it I hadn't been diagnosed with a mood disorder. Take 200mg every day now, 100mg in the morning and 100mg at night. I take fast release at night, helps me sleep. I function normally during the day - have a busy and sometimes stressful job. It has really helped me. Everyone has different experiences, none of the side effects are certain. Why do you specifically want quetiapine?

Im diagnosed with CPTSD after a list of misdiagnoses over the years and also Binge eating disorder, Past diagnosis has been schizo affective which I haven't had an episode in over 20 years, followed by EUPD which was ruled out during a long admission which had a bio psychosocial approach,

Im currently taking Cymbalta in the morning, mirtazapine at night, quetiapine morning and night, and carbamazepine morning and night so it's possible to take both together, I've been about 10 years on Cymbalta and mirtazapine was added about 2 years later.

Yes, I have put on weight over the years but it's mainly due to BED.

dangermouseisace · 20/05/2022 20:09

I've been on mirtazapine and quetiapine at the same time and separately. They fulfilled a need I suppose but I don't think quetiapine was better re weight gain.

It might be worth getting your meds reviewed by a psychiatrist but it's prob best seeing what they suggest rather than going with a specific idea, as it's very indivdual.

WayshrineNotFound · 21/05/2022 11:21

I gained 4-5 st in a few years while on quetiapine, so if weight gain is a worry for you, I'd be cautious.

WayshrineNotFound · 21/05/2022 11:22

^ to add - mirtazapine makes me more hungry, but I've totally avoided weight gain, while on quetiapine it seemed to resist all attempts to control it, and the hunger was insane.
