Elvanse - anyone find it didn’t work for them?

I’m 41and newly diagnosed combined type ADHD. I’ve been on 30mg Elvanse for two weeks.

I don’t really like it, it makes me feel really speedy and agitated and I get a massive crash in the afternoon accompanied with depression and agitation.

It doesn’t clear my head, if anything it makes me worse. I’ve always been really sensitive to stimulants, does this mean I’ve been misdiagnosed?

Op, I’m really sorry you are having this experience.

I don’t have any expertise on Elvanse but my ds has just started meds fior adhd. You might like to read a book on adhd meds (it’s for parents but is very helpful to understand the drugs). Available on Amazon by a Great Ormond St Prof of medicine. I will post the details in a minute Flowers

The book if I’ve understood it correctly says actually thinking the meds not working shows you’ve been miss dx is not correct.

Some people do best on stimulants. Some do better on the non stimulants.

According to the book

I wonder if you need a small top up to reduce the crash you are experiencing in the afternoon? My ds had this medication rebound experience as he was taking an extended release that releases predominantly in the morning. So from 1/2 pm onwards he was tearful with angry mood swings. He was given an immediate release afternoon top up and this completely went. Can you call the consultant’s secretary to say you need a medicine review?

If it’s making you feel really edgy you should definitely tell the dr - they might want you to try non stimulants Flowers

The book is called A Parents Guide to ADHD Medication by Peter Hill. It’s superb and has really helped me understand side effects etc my ds has experienced

Thanks so much for the posts. I’ll look up the guides. My psychiatrist is away for Easter annoyingly, I did take it upon myself to split the dose today though, so 15mg in the morning and the same in the afternoon. Seemed to work fairly well and no crash!

Theres a thread in neurodiverse mumsnetters about it. I struggled with it a bit and i also think 30mg is too high a starting dose for many.
Im on a low dose of Amfexa now which I tolerate so much better. Its one that youre supposed to take twice a day, but often I do not need to re-dose in the afternoon. Im also sensitive to meds, and taking 5 or 10mg of amfexa in the morning works for me and occasionally another 5mg in the afternoon.
If I havent slept well or im poorly then i dont take it as that makes me feel odd and unpleasant.

On 50 mg. 2nd month. Helping massively with stimulants. Reduced caffeine. Not binge eating. Not drinking alcohol. Gutted however it isn't helping on the emotional side. I don't feel it kick in or wear off. Not sure what to do as I don't want to give up the benefits.

I find my elvanse dose (now on 50mg) really speedy if I don't have it with a decent breakfast (I normally have with yoghurt as protein is supposed to be good to have with stimulants). I also drink quite a lot of water (although the thirst might be a side effect of the medication, I def feel better for drinking it). I have a top up in the afternoon of quick release 5mg Dex, that helps manage my emotions in the early evening dealing with the kids after school.
Good luck with it all, it can take some time to find the right medicine and dose.
