bupropion from psychiatrist

Hi, I have an appointment with private psychiatrist and I spoke to his Secretary about possibility of being prescribed bupropion as i suffer sexual dysfunction with all other ADs, she said she had heard of it and thought it possible. But after reading on here that some people have found it hard to get this even through a private psychiatrist I'm a little worried. Can anyone tell me if they have gone down this route and how they found it? Thanks in advance

Have you tried the doctor app Babylon? Will get a private prescription but not sure if they can do it .

FunnyCradock · 17/04/2022 16:50

I got it from a private psychiatrist. Then I got my local nhs CMHT consultant to take over prescribing it. They wouldn’t initiate it, but were willing to continue.

How much was the private consult? I tried one but they were £350ph.

I was hoping I could get prescription on NHS afterwards. What is CMHT please?

It's £350. I know it's horrendously expensive but as it's unavailable on nhs I'm willing to pay this to get something that may help me

@Mackers123 community mental health

What @Sugarandspice213 said re. CMHT =
Community Mental Health Team
And cost wise it was £350 for the consultation plus the medication private prescriptions (until I was able to get them from my NHS consultant). The prescriptions were around £30 for 1 month’s supply & I had to pay a £50 admin fee on top for each private prescription.

I was referred to the CMHT by my gp because the gp refused to prescribe it (even off license). Just as a heads up, the referral was rejected twice by the CMHT due to not meeting the threshold. It’s been a battle, but has been worth it.

Why was it rejected twice?
FunnyCradock · 18/04/2022 22:00

Didn’t meet the (high) referral threshold

Ok I wonder what their threshold is!

@FunnyCradock How did you go about getting an NHS consultant? So each prescription costs around £80 each time? I didn't realise they also charged £50 admin fee, so that's worth knowing, thanks.

So how did you eventually meet the threshold, did you have to do anything different?

I think the threshold is really high but they didn’t share with me exactly what it was (I’d generally just get a standard rejection letter in the post Hmm)

My referral was accepted after I complained about inaccurate information being written in my gp records (it had been documented that I had a notifiable diagnosis that potentially could have impacted by life) by one of the ACPs.
Cue the practice manager & GP partners hopping up & down to apologise & when they asked me what more they could do I said I’d like either a prescription for bupropion or a referral to someone within the nhs that would prescribe it. Again, not sure what they wrote but it worked!

Mackers123 · 20/04/2022 14:25

@FunnyCradock Thanks, glad you got there in the end. I hope I can get this via NHS afterwards, otherwise it's going to be very expensive

I thought you could get it on the nhs under the name zyban as an anti smoking treatment?

probably only prescribed for a short time I guess, which wouldn’t work if someone wanted to take it instead of a regular antidepressant. Unless you just wanted to try it to see how it works for you. Obviously means lying to your doctor(unless you do actually want to give up smoking).

I know someone who did this, they managed to give up, smoking, but bupropion made them too anxious. So they just went back on their usual A/D.

FunnyCradock · 12/05/2022 17:21

You can’t lie - they test your CO level if you ask for it for smoking cessation so they’ll know if you’re a non-smoker!
