If I get a diagnosis after seeing a psychiatrist privately, will it be on my health record?

I strongly suspect I have EUPD (emotionally unstable personality disorder) and want to know for certain / have a diagnosis if apt.

I'm considering paying privately to see a psychiatrist as I don't want this on my medical record, the condition is still far too stigmatised and its not something I want to keep to myself.

Any subsequent therapy I have will be had privately too, funds permitting.

If I don't give consent for this information to be shared with my GP, can it be kept completely confidential and not appear on my health record?

Incidentally I'm also being assessed for adhd

Private psychiatrist probably won’t agree to see you without consent to share information with your GP,

This was pretty much my experience (ultimately I didn't proceed with them, but that was because their customer support was rubbish rather than anything else). I know you've said meds wouldn't be involved with the psych treatment you want, but there are obvious implications if either your GP or your psych did prescribe anything without knowing what the other was doing.

I suppose you could claim not to have a GP if the psych refused to take you on without informing the GP--but lying and the danger of being caught in it is unlikely to make you feel better.

I'm a bit surprised that your GP would take any interest in what you were having done elsewhere. I've engaged with various specialists privatelynotes copied to the GP practiceand my GP hasn't mentioned any of them at all to me--even when I was talking to the GP about something that related to an issue I was getting private help with. Mind you, my surgery isn't interested in talking to me about things I've contacted the surgery about (not heard back on an e-Consult I put in over a week ago etc.)!

When I went for my booking-in appt when pregnant with DD, I was less than a year since a bout of major depression (wanting to die etc.) and still on a low dose of ADs. MW put "mental health historynone" in the relevant box on my notes. When I queried this, she said that by comparison they had women in with multiple recent suicide attempts, or who had been sectioned for schizophrenia etc.so in that light, my own MH issues were negligible. I know that my exp was of 'vanilla' depression rather than anything more distinct, but would still be surprised if any HCP would be actively looking to intervene if it wasn't forcibly brought to their attention.

I emailed psychiatry UK yesterday before I posted here, to ask them whether any potential diagnosis can be kept confidential as I didn't want to share it with my GP or other services. This was the reply I got.

In short, it can be kept confidential and not shared with the GP if that's what somebody wants.

I have BPD, just to let you know that some medication can really help, alongside therapy. I take SSRI and anti psychotics. Good luck.

Awalkintime · 08/04/2022 10:21

I would read more into how BPD from Dr Jessica Taylor. It is eye opening how it is just 'hysteria' by another name. Same diagnostic criteria.

Phascolarctos · 08/04/2022 10:59

I would avoid Jess Taylor's often scare mongering information - best avoided at all costs.

You don't have to consent to share information but if there's a child involved it's likely information will be shared if there is any element of perceived risk OP.

Awalkintime · 08/04/2022 11:55

I would avoid Jess Taylor's often scare mongering information - best avoided at all costs.

The theory is not one that Jess has thought of, it is widely publicised and was around way before Jess. Janet Wirth-Cauchon being one who discussed this over 20 years ago. It really isn't new.

Phascolarctos · 08/04/2022 12:19

Many mental health conditions have roots with hysteria though - it's not just EUPD.

And Jess makes mention of lots of things related to personality disorders which aren't actually correct - I mean her name has become a content warning for many people with personality disorder labels which pretty much speaks for itself.

VsecondNC · 08/04/2022 12:21

What is it that Jess says about EUPD exactly? I'm not familiar with her but I'll have a look later on when I have time

Many mental health conditions have roots with hysteria though - it's not just EUPD. So you agree with this?

I mean her name has become a content warning for many people with personality disorder labels which pretty much speaks for itself.

The irony!

VsecondNC She has many things to say about it how these labels are given and their history etc and they seek to oppress with how others use the labels following diagnosis. She believes they are not needed and all mental health has a root in trauma.

She makes some good points. Granted as most people I read her works along with the work of others and develop my own ideas from it. Some people just shoot down all she says to discredit her which is ironic in itself. I don't agree with all she says but I do with a lot of it. As with everything else you might agree or disagree but it gives another perspective.

Phascolarctos · 08/04/2022 12:50

I haven't shot down all she says - but I would avoid reading her if you are seeking a EUPD diagnosis - theres a lot of scare mongering, particularly with regards to safeguarding systems that is inaccurate. She closes down all debate on this even though many people have told her the "information" she is sharing is not correct.

And then she goes and threatens to sue people for saying she's wrong whilst also refusing to share her evidence or the names of the systems she is referring too.

Awalkintime · 08/04/2022 13:03

I haven't shot down all she says

Avoid her at all costs...scaremongering...she has become a content warning.

Really? Hmm
