Does anyone know what their protocol is for what happens when you attend A and E?

What steps do they work through to get a solution?

How bad does it get before someone gets sectioned?
At what point to they take into account an overdose and take bloods.
Should you also have a follow up with the crisis/home treatment team etc?

If you've overdosed and turn up at A and E, and tell them what's happened they will treat you for the overdose. How long you'll stay will depend on how much your body has been affected.

Crisis team will usually be involved. You'll be assessed to determine how much of a risk you are to yourself or others.

Generally at the moment someone isn't sectioned for an overdose or suicide attempt unless it's been particularly extreme or the person is also psychotic/delusional. Their history will also been considered.

Crisis teams can be really good (were in my experience).

Hope that helps.

Yes any overdose should be followed up by crisis team / home treatment team.

I work in A&E. any patient who presents feeling suicidal will be referred to crisis. Patients who present with self harm will have to be cleared medically before being referred, whether thats wound management or bloods/ecgs. Even if someone attends who hasn't self harmed but is behaving delusional or psychotic a medical cause usually needs to be ruled out.

Crisis assessment involves a 1:1 (or 2:1 for high risk patients) interview to determine whether they require psychiatric admission or community follow up

Hope this helps

I guess it depends

I've received treatment in a&e straight away for overdose
8 hours later I had a meeting with a social worker and a psychiatrist
Who agreed I could go home with home treatment team
Who were very good

Another time I was admitted to a ward for a week with 1-1 supervision until I was physically well enough to go to mental health unit
I avoided a section as I agreed to go - (didn't feel as if I had much choice )
Left with home treatment- who were rubbish 🤷🏻‍♀️

It depends how you present.
I have been to A&E countless times for MH, and most of them I do not even see the crisis team. It is PCLS, and they then decide if I need to see crisis team.
Last time, I didn't see either of them. The police were there and 136d me. I didn't realise you could be 136d from A&E.
