Something to calm me if needed

Hi

Next month we are going away on a cruise. I normally avoid anything like this, having had a panic attack on a plane 10 years ago. However DH and I are keen to try to move forward so have treated ourselves to a weekend away.

I'm now thinking ahead and wondering if there's anything I can request in case I do get a bit panicky?

As I've been like this for years, I do have usual strategies- distraction etc- but I'm feeling a bit nervous that if they don't work, then I could feel rotten for 3 whole days Sad

I think wondered if I could request something as a "just in case" from the doc? Or something I can buy over the counter?

I don't take anything generally for anxiety etc

Bach flower remedies may help
Or a one off for Valium from your GP

Propranolol works for anxiety like paracetamol for headaches . You take it when and if needed .

My GP wrote me a prescription for diazepam. It wasn’t for flying, it was for other anxiety. Bloody lovely stuff.

Try hypnotherapy. I used to be needle phobic, I’d make a holy show, fainting, throwing up, and now I can inject myself! Result!

Brilliant, thank you all. I'll get in touch with my doctor

I'm hoping that just knowing I've got something, will help to keep me calm. I rarely have to use any strategy as long as I know I have a plan, this is just a bit different as I'm subjecting myself to something for a long length of time

Headspace (the meditation app) is also very good. You can download for free and start with 5-10 mins a day. It can make a significant difference.

Thanks @bluejelly , I've already got a few apps like that which are fantastic, I have lots of other short term things too. I've booked myself some nice sessions in the spa to keep my mind entertained (or not, but relaxed!)

I am looking forward to it, just worried that anxiety will ruin it Sad

Agree with previous suggestion of propranolol. The only thing is that it doesn't stop the anxiety itself, it stops the outwards indicators of anxiety. For me it stops the initial mild anxiety spiralling into a full blown panic attack. No racing heart, no shaking, no struggling to breath. I like it because it doesn't affect inhibitions or make me feel different to normal in any way.
