Hypervigilance

Does anyone suffer from this? I've only just realised how severe it is and how much it has impacted and continues to impact my life. Especially when I'm asleep, the slightest sound and I'm in fight or flight mode. I was raised by a very angry critical mother with some narcissistic tendencies and so I wonder if that has contributed to it. She seems to be somewhat hypervigilant herself. I just wondered if anyone knows of anything to help with this, I don't want to be in a panic state for the rest of my life and constantly on the look out for potential attacks etc. I also suffer from anxiety

Yes, for sure. My commiserations & support to you. It's so sad to know that happens to little defenceless kids.

I had a similar childhood (shouting angry parent too, with emotional neglect, who could change mood rapidly- this is the non- triggering version!) then got so much better as an adult then in late 30's it started again, alongside getting overwhelmed, panic disorder, etc.

I think hormone changes have totally exacerbated it too.

Anti depressants/anti anxiety drugs weren't tolerable to me, but work for many people of course.

It's affected so many things, every single relationship & I live quite an isolated life. I'm still trying to work on the ' low self worth' feelings. In grateful for things like yoga & meditation that I do with patient, kind groups that allows me to feel safe for a while Smile
Tell me more, Progressin.

I do, as a direct result of a sexual assault over two and a half years ago (not rape).
It’s baffling and draining.
I’m on antidepressants and undergoing EMDR: the latter has helped a lot.
It’s awful and I’m sorry you are having such a tough time.
I’ve also found that if I listen to YouTube videos of help getting to sleep with anxiety (I pop on noise cancelling headphones, though have to keep an ear out for DD) I sleep much more soundly, have fewer nightmares and wake up in a more relaxed way.
