My gp just prescribed these for me 15mg . I read it makes you very hungry ?? Iv been put on these as my others gave me terrible side effects. Couldn't sleep , shaking etc etc .

I weigh 9 stone 2 and definitely don't want to put on any weight . What's side effects did you have ?

I have been on them since Aug last year. I eat normally , but have seen on here that many people have eaten more and put on weight. You need to weigh up the pros and cons. I wasn’t sleeping and was put on 10mg and whilst I now sleep really well my dosage has steadily increased to 45mg over the past few months because of anxiety and panic attacks which I now take additional meds for the panic attacks.
I can now deal with work and home stress, I am still emotional and cried twiceyesterday at work cos it’s all so shit with people off with covid but I don’t overthink situations and I am definitely in a better place now

Yes, it got me out of a severely bad phase where I was not eating or sleeping due to major depression. It took a while to work, after about 3 weeks I could see the detail/colour in things and could taste food again. Then for every month taking it after, I got better and better until I was back to my old self, which I think was about 5 years of taking it.

I had tried 5 SSRI's before that which didn't help at all and gave me other side effects/other problems to deal with. Mirtazapine is not an SSRI, it works another way.

I've read that Mirtazapine can be good for peri, so when I reach that state, I'll go back on it if need be.

As to weight gain, it made me crave junk after about 30 mins of taking it. I just learned to manage it, which was a small bowl of oatmeal made with water before going to sleep. I didn't put on any major weight. I remained in the 8-9 stone range before taking it and after 5 years of taking it.

I take 15mg a night to help me sleep. It can make you hungry, one time I woke up in the morning with 9 twix wrappers (single fingers) in the bed and a melted twix on my face and pillow. I don't remember eating them, that's an extreme reaction, but I hadn't had dinner.

I've learned to eat something before bed, or have a glass of milk, to stop the midnight munchies.

Overall it does make me sleep, and I stay asleep, it's been a godsend. Without them I'd go days with only a couple of hours of sleep. Now I have a good 8hrs a night.

I know it's obvious but, the only way you'll know how they will affect you is by trying them. If after a couple of weeks you don't like them, ask to try something else Flowers

It’s helped enormously with getting to sleep and staying asleep and therefore I’m actually eating less than I was. Being sleep deprived meant I was eating tonnes of junk food. So whilst it can increase appetite it doesn’t always lead to weight gain.

I’ve been on it since August. 15mg. Not put any weight on at all. Am also 9 stone 2. It’s really helped with my anxiety and insomnia. More than any other thing I’ve tried.

I’ve taken 30mg for over 4 years and they are little miracle tablets! I was so poorly before I took them - my insomnia had become so severe that I had a breakdown and quit my job, it was awful. Mirtazapine fixed my insomnia straight away, and my life had improved dramatically now I can sleep. It really reduced my anxiety too.

As for weight gain, I did put on weight at first - it massively increased my appetite at first. But I’m so glad I persevered, because the crazy appetite wore off after a few months, and the mental health benefits for me have been immense.

I hope they help you too Smile
