Has anyone ever had this? What mental health condition was it for and has it worked?

I'm starting mine next week for trauma and bad anxiety and I'm really skeptical!

Thank you x

Never had it, but I have read great things about it (peer reviewed papers and in text books etc as part of my master's). On the face of it, it sounds so basic and like it couldn't possibly work, but it's backed by some pretty hefty science, and there's a lot of evidence it is very effective, particularly so for trauma that happened since childhood.

I work in MH and I have had a few clients for whom this has been a life changing therapy.

I've recently completed a course of EMDR for some traumatic events that happened about six years ago. It was amazing. In three hours I went from being very upset and distressed thinking about the events, to being totally calm when thinking about them. The stages you complete before the "bilateral stimulation" (i.e. tapping, side to side eye movement etc) are really important, as is being totally comfortable with your therapist. I felt really tired afterwards and had to have a snooze for an hour or so!

I deliver it, it can be spectacular. Best of luck.

Also had it for past trauma, childhood stuff, has changed my life, after life long mg problems due to the trauma, made awful memories and physical symptoms much, much smaller and further away. Has improved the quality of my life greatly.

Thanks so much for these replies!

Really hope it works! I have a 6 month old and I'm just desperate to be the best mum to her

Yup, I've had it for trauma and severe anxiety. It's amazing. Completely baffling how it works - and I was lucky to get a very good therapist doing mine who was good at talking therapy too, which helped - but so effective.

I am not 'cured', but the trauma is more manageable now. I would like more, in time. I only worked on a few memories and have more I would like to neutralise.

How do you go about finding a good emdr therapist? Any recs?

NutellaEllaElla · 14/01/2022 22:45

Where are you?

mamajemma · 14/01/2022 22:48

I'm in Manchester!

And just through the doctors!.. they said I've got ptsd so EDMR was the best solution for me xx

My brother swears by it for childhood trauma. It helped my DH after his car crash too.

I am very impressed by the evidence. I had 2 sessions with a therapist in training- she's very experienced otherwise but not with EMDR - and chose to stop as I found it too difficult to continue. But I think my trauma was something different which made it not ideal for me.

User7777 · 14/01/2022 22:53

I was in therapy for months, possibly years, following an abusive relationship. 6 sessions of emdr and I was changed. It's amazing. No idea how it works, but it really does.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/01/2022 23:16

One of my friends delivers this. It is amazing. I have done it myself.

TiffanyIceberg · 14/01/2022 23:33

Yes, I've had it. I had it explained to me, I thought what a load of hocus pocus codswallop. I've had two big trauma's in my life. It worked. No more PTSD. Try it.

Midlander88 · 14/01/2022 23:56

I did it recently for a trauma from 17 years ago, and it worked really fast for me!

Because of a majorly stressful year, I had begun having ptsd symptoms like flashbacks and triggered panic attacks from the original trauma, which had been going on for about a year. After two sessions of EMDR the symptoms dissipated, and I can think of the original trauma like any other memory.

The only thing that is a little jarring is that most NHS are currently doing Zoom only sessions, and it can cause a lot of stress in the moment if the Internet connection lags. Personally, I would recommend holding out for a therapist willing to do face to face EMDR.
