Anxiety people… do you get the whooshy chest sensation?

Been driving myself a bit mad with this one so I thought I’d see if anyone else with anxiety gets this.

For the last week or so, I’ve been getting an odd sensation in my chest/stomach. It’s like a surge, a whooshy sort of feeling. It lasts a second, maybe less. Some days it’ll happen only a couple of times, some days it’s more frequent. It generally happens when I’m sitting down or at my desk.

It feels like it surges up my body towards my throat. But quite subtle at the same time. It’s almost like that surge of excitement or anticipation you get, but not as nice! Perhaps it’s adrenaline or something.

I’m wondering if it’s some kind of nervous system response. I have been particularly anxious since Christmas, for various reasons. I do feel generally quite jittery at the moment.

I’m virtually 100% certain it isn’t my heart because I’ve had heart monitors on when it’s happened and they never register anything, even on continuous monitoring. And I’ve had heart palpitations previously and they don’t feel like this.

Another way of describing it is like a sort of momentary stomach-drop sensation.

I get this too and suffer with anxiety.. I always put it down to a rush of adrenaline like the flight or fight feeling sensation.. only lasts a second though. Definitely happens more when I'm extremely anxious x

Yes. Propranolol helps x

Bearyhumcrack · 08/01/2022 17:10

Yes I do. It makes my ears zing. Hope you're ok.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/01/2022 17:12

Thanks both x

I’ll check propranolol out… although I’m already on ADs so might not be able to take it as well.

Just pleased — well, not pleased exactly but you know 😬 — that other people know what I’m on about!

Yeah I’m basically alright I think x

I’m at that point with anxiety now where the physical symptoms sometimes come in a totally disconnected timeframe to the feelings. So I might get a sensation now but it’s because I was super-anxious a week ago.

The more I read about anxiety, the more I think I have it...!! I know exactly what you're talking about and experience it fairly regularly. As far as I know, I'm fine!

Yoyooo · 08/01/2022 17:18

I am having this right now 😢

Me too... I say to my family I tend to deal with what ever situation at the time it happens then have a delayed reaction! It's like my body thinks ok so your nice and calm now so bam 💥have some of these lovely sensations!!

Not nice, is it?

Although I just spoke to DH and apparently he gets it too. So we’re not alone Wine

I'm feeling this right now about something I'm dreading at work next week. It's almost a painful pulling sensation in my chest and up to my throat. I know that the thing I am dreading next week will not be as bad as I think but I can't shake the feeling. My head is whirring.

I was dreading waking up in the night last night and dwelling on it because everything seems worse in the middle of the night. But I slept under a weighted blanket and was fine but the feelings have returned over the day so I'm looking forward to getting back under my blanket tonight!

All sounds familiar, squirts of adrenaline and cortisol from an anxious brain. I definitely dont like the feelings but as i calm down in The evening it subsides. Stress is a big trigger for me. Hope you feel better and dont forget its good to talk...

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/01/2022 18:49

Bob yes I find it calms down in the evenings too

I suffer from Anxiety and I know exactly what you're talking about! It's like when you are falling asleep and suddenly jolt awake thinking you are falling. Horrible feeling!

Bob202 · 08/01/2022 19:13

How do you do during the day? My meds stopped working recently (stressful event) hoping they kick back in soon...

NightmareSlashDelightful · 09/01/2022 08:57

I’m generally worse first thing in the morning. It’s like I wake up having had fretty dreams! 😡 I think my AD pill kicks in late morning (I’m on an SSRI) and I start to feel better from 10 ish.
