I've been put forward for it. But I'm worried about what will involve.

I've done a course of face to face CBT, and it is them who have referred me onwards as all I could do most of the time was cry (or run out of the rest I'm). I'm scared

Hi :)
I was on the pilot programme for DBT therapy ! There where 8 of us that where chosen to be the first ones to try it .
I found it amazing . I had self harmed from 11 years old until starting DBT. (24)
I have not self harmed since .
They Teach you coping techniques such as mindfulness . And other useful things , I had my own psychiatrist throughout aswell!

Best of luck !

Thankyou.does it have to be done as a group, or can it be individual. I also have history of self harm/suicidal thoughts, but it is mainly social anxiety I have now

I had 18 months of DBT and it was excellent. I found CBT a bit feeble on its' own as it didn't explore the reasons behind certain negative learned behaviours, whereas DBT does. Mine was group therapy, so the focus wasn't purely on me which I was very grateful for as I don't feel comfortable being the centre of attention. DBT essentially teaches skills that enable you to successfully cope with extreme emotions in a productive and positive way and break the negative cycles of behaviour that have lead to you needing therapy in the first place. I honestly think most people would benefit from DBT, not just those with BPD or other MH profiles. It is scary doing something new like this, but the benefits are definitely worth the initial discomfort.

Thank you, you have helped. I had to wait 2 years for my CBT, wonder how long it will be for DBT?

I’m currently doing DBT I have a group session and individual session a week. There’s a lot of skills learning and mindfulness. It’s been really helpful.
There’s a few videos on YouTube I really like kati morton who had a very positive outlook

Hi there,
My 16 yr old DD has very impulsive behaviour and I think an Internet addiction.
Has anyone in London done any DBT therapy or heard of the Bear Project? its a day treatment centre. Or the Recovery Centre. CAMHS have been helpful but limited and am now looking at private therapy which seems expensive and hard to figure out.

DBT literally changed my life, I am so grateful for it. I hope you don't have long to wait.

Mine was weekly group sessions and individual 121s. Years later I still have my amazing DBT therapist weekly we still talk about which skills to use when I come up against a difficult or challenging situation in my life.

Thanks so much
Pupcakes.
May I ask, was it impulsive behaviour that led you to DBT?

pupcakes · 16/02/2022 21:00

Yes, very @Blackcurrentyoghurt plus extreme emotions/lack of regulation, self harm.

Blackcurrentyoghurt · 17/02/2022 09:37

Thanks pupcakes. Did you do meds plus DBT?
She was on apriprozole briefly. I’d prefer just therapy but realise sometimes meds help but she is only 16

Valenciaoranges · 17/02/2022 22:31

I have just started: an hour of one to one plus 2 hours of group every week for at least 6 months. All ok so far, but I know I will have to work at it.

pupcakes · 19/02/2022 21:14

@Blackcurrentyoghurt yep- apri is meant to be ok, I'm on olazapine after trying many others.
