Hi. So the doctor has prescribed me 50mg sertraline . I've never been on anti depressants in my life and give birth 4 months ago and also left a abusive relationship. I'm wondering shall I start them or shall I start exercising and coming to terms with things .... help

No one knows what's right for you but you. I am on sertraline and it has really helped. Exercise can also help. You have to decide if exercise is enough to lift the depression. In my case, it wasn't.

Start them. I was in your position almost a year ago with the pills and they’ve helped me so much x

Clymene · 28/12/2021 11:42

You've been prescribed medication by a medical professional. Why wouldn't you take them?

ChrissyPlummer · 28/12/2021 11:42

I’ve been on them for about 18 months and they saved me. Exercise can certainly help, but in my case wasn’t enough on its own. You may feel a bit rough the first couple of weeks, I had headaches and nausea, but after that you should start to feel much better.

Because I've never taken one before and I've heard good and bad from them.

Thanks all, I'll probably start today. Should I take half a tablet first ?

I would take them! Sertraline was life changing for me but I take them for anxiety not depression. They help you make more serotonin (usually you basically recycle it, well that’s how my doc described it). Give them a go and a chance to take effect - can have a bumpy few weeks getting used to them but many people including me don’t.

CorrBlimeyGG · 28/12/2021 11:50

Take the dose prescribed.

cheeseislife8 · 28/12/2021 11:51

I've been on sertraline and found that they really helped. They did take a little time but it made a massive difference. For me, exercise alone wouldn't have been enough.
You've been prescribed them for a reason though, I'd give them a shot

xxxllbxxx · 28/12/2021 11:55

Thanks. I'm currently on lymecline for my skin tho would I be ok ?

Presumably you went to the doctor because you felt depressed so why are you reluctant to take the medication prescribed for you?

You'll only know if the medication will help by actually taking it. It doesn't suit everybody but, as others have said, it can be very effective.

BigHeartyTruffle · 28/12/2021 11:57

Your doctor should have told you everything you need to know about what dose to start on and how it may interact with your other medications. If you aren’t sure, I’d ring the surgery to clarify.

Sertrallne has been a god send for me. With minimal side effects.

PrittySticky · 28/12/2021 12:04

If you are feeling different and its post-natal then coming to terms with things may be impossible, I genuinely felt like a different person post-natal, & it took me years to be myself again thanks to Sertraline.

I knew I didn't feel right, but I put it down to exhaustion, periods changing, breastfeeding etc.

Sertraline was prescribed alongside Progesterone but thank goodness it was, absolutely life changing, no more fatigue & no feeling overwhelmed.

You could try the Freedom Programme to assist with the feelings from the relationship,

I should imagine with Sertraline & the Freedom Programme you will be grand Flowers

Good luck to you & baby, and well done for leaving Smile

If the doctor has prescribed them I would take them. I spent years avoiding medication and trying to 'cope on my own' and feeling so ashamed to even be needing medication. I am now on 50mg sertraline and it has honestly given me such a boost! I'm definitely a better mother and wife because of it - I'm not planning on being on the medication forever, but it's certainly helping to take the edge off of things for me at the moment (along with some counselling!) I would suggest that you give them a go OP.

xxxllbxxx · 28/12/2021 12:07

Thanks everyone . Going to ring doctors tomorrow as they're closed today and see if it's ok with lymecline . Definitely going to try sertraline . X

Or if not going to stop lymecline . Mental health is my priority definitely going to give it a try , what was the common side effects or are they all different

OP posts:
SuperSange · 28/12/2021 12:08

Go to a pharmacy, they'll be able to tell you. I doubt the GP would have prescribed it otherwise.

SuperSange · 28/12/2021 12:09

The common side effects are in the leaflet inside the box.
