Driving with a diagnosis of bpd.

Do I need to declare my bpd to DVLA, as it definitely affects my ability to drive, as when I get triggered or my anxiety is really bad, I often drive way over the speed limit and sometimes get right up other cars tails because I believe they've tried to harm me.

Yes you do have to notify them of BPD

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/12/2021 16:49

Yes you absolutely must - you could be in serious trouble if you don’t.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 27/12/2021 21:47

Or…you could just stop driving like such a dick?

santaclothes · 27/12/2021 21:48

Stop driving Angry

Here is some information.

BPD is not an illness, I have this and although I haven't learnt to drive I didn't think I'd have to disclose it and I haven't.

I dont/wouldn't drive like a cunt though

milkysmum · 27/12/2021 22:03

No I don't believe you do. If you have an admission associated with your condition your doctor is likely to advise the DvLA is informed ( and will inform them if you decline), or if you are on medication that impairs your ability to drive, but a condition such as BPD/ EUPD does not in its self require declaring to DVLA.

TheUndoingProject · 27/12/2021 22:04

Yes, of course.

Driving with a diagnosis of bpd.
Cyberworrier · 27/12/2021 22:21

Never been told to disclose my mental health condition to DVLA, certain medications mean you can't drive but personally have never been told that (managed and treated) BPD would affect my ability to drive.
OP, you sound like you need to get help for your BPD and it does sound like you are aware that you are driving dangerously, so you definitely need to stop driving for the time being. Please go to your GP or speak to your therapist if you have one. I recommend DBT if you haven't already tried it.

santaclothes · 27/12/2021 22:23

Never been told to disclose my mental health condition to DVLA,

It's not up to anyone to tell you, the responsibility is all yours. If you have a notifiable condition then you have to tell them, you can't just say ' o one told me to'

givemepiece · 27/12/2021 22:25

Op. Read your original post back.

Regardless of the legalities, please don't drive. You are a danger.

Poochnewbie1 · 27/12/2021 22:29

Are you getting treatment to help you manage your BPD?
If you really are likely to drive dangerously when triggered, it would be a good idea to avoid it until you are more stable.

Cyberworrier · 27/12/2021 22:36

"You must tell DVLA if you have a personality disorder and it affects your driving.
You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t tell DVLA about a medical condition that affects your driving. You may be prosecuted if you’re involved in an accident as a result.
Ask your doctor if you’re not sure if your personality disorder affects your driving."
Well, GP has told me before if medication means I shouldn't drive, is aware I drive and is aware of my having BPD. Having checked Gov page it says you need to disclose if it affects your driving, and it doesn't affect mine. I'm a very careful driver who learned and passed first time in last few years! Well managed BPD does not necessarily affect someone's ability to drive. There is a lot of misinformation about different mental health conditions and many assumptions made. Not everyone is the same. Clearly the OP's ability to drive is affected and she should not be driving. I hope the OP also gets help to live with BPD as it can become much easier to live with, with the right help 💐

lisaandalan · 27/12/2021 22:52

Stop driving

peboh · 27/12/2021 23:18

You shouldn't be driving. BPD isn't an excuse for piss poor driving and shitty behaviour.

Bagelsandbrie · 27/12/2021 23:39

If you know your driving is this bad you shouldn’t be driving.

Yes but borderline personality disorder and personality disorder are different things

XenoBitch · 17/05/2022 23:59

You only have to declare BPD to the DVLA if your care team have said it affects your driving.
You have said so yourself that it affects your driving, so you do need to declare it. You can get in very serious trouble if you do not.

They are literally the same thing.
