I am a teacher currently looking for a new job. I have BPD/EUPD and as my current workplace is supportive and they've never seen it as an issue, I didn't think it would be a problem for me to declare this on job application, as it's well managed and is never an issue at work (plus I need reasonable adjustments, so declaring it seemed sensible to ensure I have these in place).
However I've not had a single interview for any of the roles I've applied for, depite meeting and usually exceeding the minimum requirements for the role. I've had several people look over my applications and they can't see anything wrong. I have a lot of achievements and responsibilities at work so I would hope it was obvious from this (and my lack of days off) that the BPD doesn't impact on my performance or relationships at work.
Some of these jobs are at places the supposedly guarantee interviews to disabled candidates (which I consider myself to be and declare it as a mental disability on the form). When I've asked for feedback on why my application didn't progress, I'm either ignored or sent a generic email.
I'd put it down to the competition, but a friend of mine who is a manager told me they would never hire a borderline, which got me wondering if this was the reason.
Do you declare MH illnesses at application stage? Or as an employer, do you worry about employing someone with MH issues? I'm wondering if I should leave the BPD off applications, but I also think I don't have anything to be ashamed of and not talking about it adds to the stigma.
