Annoyed with Doc

I've been struggling for a really long time with depression and now suspect I have ADHD as tick most of the boxes on the self test.

I've always been resistant to taking meds as these only mask the symptoms and am therapy but it's taking too long to help so have resigned myself to the fact that I need help as really not coping

So after some lookin up online I found one bupropion anti depressant that doesn't lead to weight gain (I have an eating disorder so the prospect of weight gain from SSRIs is really upsetting) and has also been found effective for ADHD

The doc wouldn't even consider prescribing this particular SNRI and insisted that I go back on sertraline even though it didn't really work for me when I first tried it

What are my options, should I push back or accept it?

Ask to see another gp.

DaisyNGO · 24/11/2021 01:03

I am not a doctor
But I thought bup was only prescribed short term for stopping smoking in the UK

also, it's neither SSRI nor SNRI but I'm not sure what you are after

I looked into it because I get really bad SAD but the doc just said it was for smoking cessation only

That was a few years back so def double check.

DaisyNGO · 24/11/2021 01:04

*it's meabt to be good for SAD and I only wanted something for Nov, Dec, Jan max

Cameleongirl · 24/11/2021 01:11

I'm on Escitalopram for anxiety and haven't gained any weight. Sertraline didn't do anything for me. I'd suggest asking to try another AD.

Malhao · 24/11/2021 01:13

@Haggisfish3 I might just do that. Doc didn't even give me a proper reason just said that's not normally prescribed it would have to come from psychologist when on the NHS website it can be give by gp or stop smoking service

Good point @DaisyNGO I have seen reports it helps with SAD which I think I suffer from too now that you mention it

I ask my psychiatrist for a anti depressants that's not related to OCD and all he could bang on about was switching me to another. Kept pointing out the one I was on was not sposed to put on much weight I have a eatting disorders and over weight. They still try and push me on ones that put on weight. The GP is no expert they have to follow nice guidelines. So have a look at them for depression and ADHD and see which ones overlap and more likely to get it.

Malhao · 24/11/2021 01:39

Did your psychiatrist mention why they were pushing those meds on you @JessieLongleg?

If they have a proper reason it would help patients understand and accept recommendations but it just seems like they resent patients trying to make informed decisions

I'm not in the UK but Buproprion isn't licensed for depression here either.
My psychiatrist prescribes it for me regardless as I've refused point blank to take anything else now. I have weight gain on bloody everything apart from Buproprion. And I've been on psychiatric meds for 8 yrs now so I've tried all sorts.
She also changed my mood stabiliser because of my weight gain concerns.
It's been a relief for me to find a psychiatrist who listens and accepts that my requests are well informed, and will have an actual discussion about pros and cons with me.
But it certainly took a while.
And I've only been able to do this by going private. If you can afford a private appointment you'll hopefully find that you don't get such a dismissive, cookie cutter response. It may absolutely not be the right drug for you. But you'll come away knowing why that's the case, and what your alternative is.

It was cos I have three diagnosis so what I was on was for depression. I was pushing for therapy for my OCD. He kept saying what your on is not suitable for OCD . Kept pointing out I don't want to be on meds I only went in then because as lockdown started DWP stopped my disability that triggered of my back problems I was having due to siactica. The anti depressant I choose was in trial for nerve pain, was shown to be one of the best anti depressants and not associated with weight gain. Was on it for a year it's did help short term and my weight stayed the same for that time. The psychiatrist was more interested in just putting on the group of NICE recognised meds for OCD. It's two years later, I'm off them and was diagnosed with anxiety disorder as got really stressed about not being able to walk. Yet a chriopractor sorted my siactica out. The psychiatrist that put me the prescription originally was nice but I never spoke to her again. Still no therapy for OCD. Only took 18months for DWP to switch my benefits back on. The CMHT have barely lifted a finger to support me

GPs are not permitted to prescribe bupropion for depression as it is not licensed for that purpose. An NHS psychiatrist can prescribe it, but normally only once other options have been exhausted.

CorrBlimeyGG · 24/11/2021 09:06

on the NHS website it can be give by gp or stop smoking service

That information relates to smoking cessation, and then only a short course can be prescribed.

GP here. Don't think buproprion is licensed for depression in the UK. Plenty of antidepressants don't cause wt gain in the majority of patients.
