Felt depressed since Jan. Will probably lose my job of 25 years. Not taking ad's. Took one day of sertaline and felt so wired couldn't sleep. Am seriously depressed. Any advice? I'm 54.

Was there anything that triggered the depression? Can you get your doctor to sign you off sick for a couple of weeks and start taking the antidepressants then so you haven't got to worry about work whilst they get into your system.

LindaEllen · 04/11/2021 08:49

Hey :). Starting Sertraline can be tough. I didn't sleep on my first night of it either. But the side effects pass. I've been on it for almost 11 months now and it's changed my life. Honestly, if you can get past the first few weeks, the effects could be incredible and give you what you need to enjoy your life again :).

LadyCatStark · 04/11/2021 08:51

Start taking the Sertraline again and just work through the side effects. They are short lived and it has changed my life!

DMVJ · 04/11/2021 08:52

Am signed off currently. But not taking meds. Was also prescribed mitrapine. Not taking any of them. I'm terrified! Not a good patient. I'm in bed a lot. Getting worse.

How long did it take to get over side effects? Was it for anxiety or depression? I have both quite severely. Very Severely.

Am so sorry you've been feeling like this for so long. I wouldn't usually push meds on anyone but I have been on sertraline for 15 years now and possibly will be on them for many more. They saved my life. I have done counselling too but sometimes our brains need a bit more help. Please give them another try. If after a few weeks they really don't suit you then go back to your GP and get them changed. Took a few attempts to get the right meds for me. Obviously if you feel poorly and worse go and speak to GP. But something will make you feel better and I promise life will be good again xxxx

Thanks. I'm terrified and impatient. Bad combo. Did you take it for depression? Xxx thanks.

@WingingItSince1973 what others did you try?

@DMVJ a couple of days, that’s all. Honestly, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s for depression for me.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 04/11/2021 11:04

Persevere with the Sertraline. It's a pretty easy AD as the side effects don't tend to last past a fortnight and it's widely tolerated by most people.

I've tried loads of ADs but I can't tolerate SSRIs so take Amitriptyline instead which is a tricyclic. Sertraline is gentler so give it a chance before discounting it.

Speak to your doctor about a lower dose, or different kind of anti-depressant would be my first course of action, but it may also be worth trying pushing through it with what you currently have, people react differently and sleep disruption is common both with depression and anti-depressants themselves.
DMVJ · 07/11/2021 08:14

Hi! Thanks all.

I'm still feeling very very low. Things not improving. Need help.

Hi DMVJ,
Sertraline is a good antidepressant .
However like all antidepressants , it takes around 4-6 weeks to start to work . For the first few weeks , you can actually feel worse whilst taking it . A lot of people get very anxious in the first few weeks . Sometimes GPs prescribe a short course of Xanax to deal with that . Sertraline can cause insomnia so best to take it in the morning

Has anyone suffered from severe depression? Any tips?

OP posts:
Sarahlou63 · 20/11/2021 16:02

Lots of people suffer from depression of varying severity. It can be helped by therapy, medication or a mixture of both. Unfortunately taking that first step towards recovery is something only you can do.

This book is a good place to start.

Hi everyone,

I know depression is an incredibly hard and challenging topic for many people. I'm carrying out a study into types of depression and the effects of different treatments for it. If you are being treated for your depression and would like to contribute I would be really grateful if you could fill out this form - it's completely anonymous so your name isn't required, nor will your responses be shared anywhere other than in my report.

Are you taking your meds? My first tip would be to do that
