Anxiety in the morning

I am going through a separation and whilst I am coming to terms with it and feel more empowered and excited for my future, I still wake up during the night/in the morning feeling very sick and panicky. I've been telling myself "I am okay, I am okay" but I'd love to hear other methods for managing this in the short term please.

I sympathise with you. This is a terrible feeling. Sorry I can't help but would be interested to see how other people have dealt with this.

Vitamin D might help. I used to wake with more general anxiety but not since I’ve been taking this each day. Worked for my sister too.

That's a good idea, thanks! I need to motivate myself to do this

It's difficult isn't it. Sometimes I wake up gasping for breath because I've felt so panicky! There have been some helpful suggestions so far :)

That's really interesting! Thanks for the tip, I think I'll get myself some Vit D tablets then

In the morning when you wake your body gets a shot of cortisol which is designed by nature to get you moving and out of bed. The trouble is that physically this can feel very similar to anxiety, and it can be difficult to tell the difference.

I've found telling myself that it's not anxiety, just a normal body response to waking up helps. Plan to do some meditation/deep breathing/listen to relaxing song when you first wake up and it can help to take the edge off while your body adjusts to being awake.

A counsellor explained the above to me once and I found that knowing there was a practical, rational reason helped me to cope with the unpleasant feelings.

Sympathies, I get this a lot and it's horrible. Alongside the reassuring myself that I'll be ok, i use music to distract myself. Singing along is sctually very good as it makes you breathe regularly and more deeply - which is good for anxiety, plus it's fun!
