Racing heart. Agitated. Wanting to harm myself. Took one dosage of mirtazapine on Saturday night and feel awful.

Any ideas?

I took one dose of sertraline and thought I was going to die. I had chest pain, racing heart, couldn't see properly like my vision was flickering, my eyes were rolling back in my head, clenched jaw.

It felt like all my love for my DC and DH had been cut off and I couldn't feel love at all. I was left with only negative emotions.

DH took me to A&E. my blood pressure was Sky high. They kept me there for some hours till it started wearing off and gave me strong pain relief for the chest pain. It took almost week before I could feel anything positive like love for my DC again.

Truly horrible and awful. Never again. You couldn't pay me to take or even try another AD ever. Awful dangerous stuff.

Bet the doctors told you to try it for a month….

I started off on Setraline but had some side effects (they made my depression worse) so changed to Mirtazapine. I’ve not had any issues with it, apart from the fact that it literally knocks me out, so I take it at night. I think all ADs make you feel a bit ‘disconnected’ at first. Talk to your GP but I’d suggest it will settle in a few days.

ADs can make you feel worse initially, but you need to persevere to give them a chance to work.

Whenever I have changed my ADs I have had to sleep through the first few days to get through the side effects - for most people they do ease. I remember talking to my GP about it and he said "you're on a psycho-active drug, there will be side effects at first."

True and I also feel that is quite dismissive.

@Talktalkchat actually no. I was told to stop immediately. If I was to try ADs again it would need to be a completely different type and not an SSRI.
Not that I would. It was a horrible and scary experience.

I've been on Mirtazapine for about 4 years, on the highest dose of 45mg.

When I first started on it, it was 15mg then quickly went up to 30mg. I remember feeling so "high" and full of energy as if I could have run around the block.

Stick with it, but tell the GP, so they can monitor things. Take it before bedtime. Good luck.

Good to know!

Still waiting to hear back to what my GP says

I took Mirtazapine for post natal depression. I only took them for a few days. I felt absolutely awful, maybe if I had persevered my body would have adjusted but with a new baby I just couldn’t handle feeling so out of it.

Awful isn’t it! Especially with a new baby.
