Has anyone ever ended up with infected self harm cuts before? How did you know if they were? Did you speak to the GP or where did you go for help and what did they do? Thanks in advance.

Infected self-harm cuts will be red, hot to the touch, painful or itchy. Unfortunately it is very easy and common for them to become infected.

You should speak with your GP. As well as prescribing you antibiotics to treat any infection they will also be able to advise you on wound care to prevent this from happening again. If/when you are ready, they will be able to refer you for support to try and stop self-harming. But if you're not ready, they will treat you regardless.

Sending you strength, OP. Please take care.

Hi OP, I know my adult DD unfortunately has. Pretty sure the cuts itch, smell, weep yellow discharge and there can be a growing redness / heat as signs of an infection. V good idea to get to a GP (emergency appt) or A&E. Deep cuts may require stitches and an infected cut can cause sepsis. Antibiotics may be needed. If in doubt, don’t wait. Sorry you are experiencing this. Self harm is grim, but sadly quite common. Have no fear or worry about talking to a medic…,they shouldn’t be shocked at all. Good luck!

Yes, I have. They were very red around the edges, hot to the touch and were oozing all colours of the rainbow.
I went to the GP, and I was put on antibiotics that cleared it all up.
I have been self harming for over 20 years, and (touch wood), that has the only time I have had an infection. I know someone who self harmed once, and ended up being admitted to hospital with sepsis.
