Has anyone had any experience of promazine? I have no mental health issues just finding hard to fall asleep lately, I've been given 1 weeks worth one 25mg a night but I feel like they're a bit too strong for someone that's been having a wee bit of trouble sleeping x

Do you mean promethazine? I think I took them every other night. Tolerance builds up very quickly by the way.

No it's promazine, the doc said she woukd give me a relaxant antihistamine that could help me sleep which I think would be promethazine but got the prescription and it was promazine, I'm not sure if shes given me the wrong thing but I have read promazine can help with sleep

It is different to promethazine which is frequently recommended for insomnia and is relatively harmless.

I wouldn't take Promazine.

Oh right OK, can I ask why?.

I'm very sensitive to anything like that, the side effects would be worse than what it is aimed to cure.

However I think you've been given the wrong meds.

Promethazine is an anti histamine sedative which can help you sleep and won't harm you.

Check with the pharmacist or GP? Either could have have prescribed or dispensed the wrong medication. Promethazine makes more sense as a first treatment. You can buy it in the chemist as phenergan.

Thanks guys, I'm not going to take it tonight will check with doc tomorrow, thankyou!

I take promazine (not promethazine) and part of the reason for me IS to help me sleep (I have other meds that are supposed to make me sleepy, too, but not much luck). I do have pretty extensive MH issues, though, which were the main reason it was prescribed to me.

Rubyrose13 · 16/09/2021 07:08

Thanks everyone for taking time to comment, I've not taken any and will speak to doctor when I eventually get through! It's been the doctor that's made the mistake and glad I googled promazine 1st!

Promazine is part of the family of antipsychotic drugs I think. I mean you are supposed to tell the DVLA if you take them, that's the level they sit at.

Plumtree391 · 16/09/2021 10:19

You're right, MistySkies. I didn't want to say that but it filled me with horror when I read that the op was prescribed Promazine, and she had given no indication of being psychotic.

I hope you sort it out today, op.

Just so you know - not everyone who takes Promazine is psychotic or has psychotic symptoms. I was prescribed this medication to treat anxiety.

Fair enough, Purple.

Yeah, mine is mainly for psychomotor agitation symptoms. I've never been psychotic, and I don't think it's considered a very good antipsychotic these days.
