Question about Sertraline. EMETOPHOBES PLEASE DON'T CLICK

My question is: is Sertraline worse than other ADs for causing sickness?

Sometimes if I forget a pill for a couple of days I feel slightly dizzy and queasy.

Twice recently I have started to feel very very sick extremely suddenly.

Any movements, of eyes or body, worsen the feeling so I have to lie still with eyes closed.

On the second occasion I actually threw up, several times, over the course of a couple of hours during the night. It was hell.

I had been to a wedding reception the night before and had a largish amount of wine. I'm sure this was a contributing factor, but not enough on its own to cause so much sickness.

Anyone any similar experience?

ADs and alcohol can combine a bit unpredictably, so it could possibly have been the alcohol - or you could have ate something dodgy at the wedding. I wouldn't necessarily assume it was the sertraline that did it that time.

The way we react to drugs is very individual - I've never felt sick on any ADs, and wouldn't have thought that Sertraline was likely to be worse than any other SSRIS (modern ADs similar to prozac) - I would have thought something with a short half life like Seroxat would be worse if you forget to take the pills than Sertraline.

Thanks TC, that's helpful. I've had minor queasiness with other ADs but never this full-on nausea. The alcohol probably did play a large part, but I'm pretty sure the AD had a part to play too.
Will just have to abstain, I think!

i never felt queasy whilst on it but it was quitea low dose

I used to get nausea on sertraline especially when settling into the medcation. I couldn't drink on it as it made me feel very queezy.

Thanks for responses. I'm getting the impression that Sertraline is no better or worse than other ADs.

i have been on sertraline for two years. a few things i have discovered are :
miss two days and feel dizzy / light-headed
alcohol goes to one's head immediately (oh bugger) - i am a very cheap date
migraine and pnd controlled beautifully with 100mg each day, how the hell am i gonna get off them
i have to take them after evening meal 6pm is or else have a huge hang-over and shaking when i wake the following morning.

but it is worth it

Threadworm · 03/12/2007 20:19

Thanks gigglewitch. Really glad that the sert helps you. 100mg is a bit more than me -- i take 80.

(I've been on various ADs in the past and not had probs coming off- as long as I cut back very gradually.

I've always been a bit blase about alcohol. Will be more careful now.

When I started taking sertraline I was sick - and if I forgot to take one I was nauseaus (that spelling does not look right).

It's been pretty much the same with citralopram, which I'm taking at the moment. The cit is worse for me with alcohol not being good with it - I'm pretty much off alcohol at the moemnt (but don't want it anyway ).

Hope you feel a bit better soon.

gigglewitchyouamerryxmas · 03/12/2007 20:42

how long have you been on it, Threadworm?

lilylilyrose · 16/12/2007 16:37

I'm taking sertraline at the moment - been on it about 3 weeks. I've missed 2 days' worth and have been feeling dizzy/queasy allday - wasn't sure why until I read this post! So I think it's a fairly normal side-effect.
