How do I find a reputable psychiatrist in my area?

After suffering for most of my life with anxiety and other anxiety related disorders things have been getting so much worse recently and I would really like to see a psychiatrist to get some understanding as to what has been going on in my head for all of these years,
The CBT and other suggestions that the GPs offer me just haven’t cut into it and I need something deeper.
How do I go about finding a reputable psychiatrist in my area or the U.K.
If you have seen a psychiatrist how did you find them?

A psychiatrist is not necessarily what you need as their role is mainly to diagnose and prescribe medication. The appointments are shorter and less frequent so there isn't much time to do any deep work. If you are wanting to explore your past and how it impacts your current symptoms then a psychoanalytic psychotherapist is probably the best professional to help with this. Have a look on the BPC website www.bpc.org.uk/

August is not an ideal time as most therapists take August off so you might have to wait before anyone gets back to you.

Previous poster is correct, psychiatrists don't offer any kind of talking therapy although they will ask you a lot of questions about your mood and behaviour in order to reach a diagnosis. If this is what you are looking for, then I would suggest going back to your GP and explicitly asking to be referred to a psychiatrist. But if it's talking therapy you want, then I agree with the PP that psychoanalytic therapy is your best bet.

nordica Thank you for the info, I will definitely look into that. One of the reasons I want to see a psychiatrist is in the hope they are able to diagnose and I do have suspect that my issues may be as a result of undiagnosed ADHD, I also would like support with medication.

I suggest a clinical psychologist; search for one on the British psychological society website and check they have HCPC registration. They have qualifications to the doctoral level (higher standard than any other therapist) and can offer a range of therapies.

TedMullins thank you. I should have mentioned in the original post that I would like to start with a possible diagnosis as I have, for many years wondered if I have ADHD or something similar and then move on from there to go deeper into talking/analytical therapy.
I am currently awaiting a gp telephone appointment, I will ask to be referred but haven’t had much luck in the past, I just get offered CBT which doesn’t help me.

I’ve had the same issue, CBT is a sticking plaster for mild anxiety and really won’t touch the sides of a more serious mental health issue. I really had to beg for a psychiatrist referral and I was in a crisis state when I asked for this, but it really shouldn’t have come to that. Just be firm and explain that CBT doesn’t help and stress how much your issues are affecting your life and you need to explore the possibility of a more complex diagnosis

I found my psychiatrist via google. I was mainly looking for someone that I clicked with and struck lucky second time around. The relationship can be very different if you're paying privately - I see mine once or twice a week. He diagnoses and sorts out meds but also does some therapy work too.

I didn’t have any luck with my gp yesterday, she said she couldn’t refer me and again just offered me antidepressants (the same ones she knows gave me bad side effects!).
Looks like I am going to have to go this alone.
I’ll start googling!

I was diagnosed with ADHD via a Teams assessment with Axia ASD in Chester. They do not prescribe medication but after your assessment can recommend companies that do

F107 thank you. I will check that out.
