Sertraline

I started on 25mg of sertraline last Friday and ever since I've felt nauseous (not great as I'm emetophobic), had acid reflux, stomach cramps and some worsening of IBS. Please tell me this is normal and will pass. I'm so scared that I have a bug (this is one of my worse fears) and that I will pass it on to my family.
Please tell me your stories of sertraline and that it gets better? I really want this to work as I have tried so many other meds and I can't carry on the cycle of coming off slowly and starting another slowly.
I'm finding life incredibly difficult and just have days where I don't want to be here anymore

It’s normal. Tell your GP though they may have suggestions.
Good luck!

Emetophobe here and I felt nauseous, stomach gurgle-y,(and exhausted) on Sertraline at first but it does pass and after around 2 weeks it was fine and I have none of those symptoms now.

It's supposed to help with anxiety isn't it? I'm hoping it will numb the terror I feel when there's a bug in the dc's school...the one good thing about Covid has been that everyone's treating hand hygiene in school seriously!

Is it's worrying you the GP should be able to prescribe some anti-emetics to cover you while you're adjusting, well done for getting help it's often the toughest part so just hang in there and you'll be feeling more like yourself soon Flowers

Thanks
I have been getting help for years, sertraline is my 5th medication and non have worked.
I have antiemetics and 2mg diazepam for when needed. I'm just so scared, and I know I will have to up it eventually and that scares me too
I really hate my life, it's become so stressful and my anxiety/OCD has taken over and I can't live like this.

I have no advice, just tons of sympathy...people will say to me "I don't know how you cope with xyz" and it's because they don't see how I internalise everything and I'm riddled with anxiety.

Take whatever respite you can and if there's something that makes you happy, don't feel bad for prioritising it on your life, you really do deserve it.

[Tries to take own advice]

Sympathy from me too. I've actually just come off sertraline and I'm now trying venlafaxine. Sertraline did really help me for a few years, especially with anxiety.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you both, I feel so rubbish today, it sucks

Hi I tried stertraline for my emetophobia, I was terrified it would make me sick so cut the 50mg tablets in half, I only got to day 5 when I had palpitations through the night that lasted four hours I felt so sick and ill , I was too scared to take them again. I would love to beat this. Please let us know if they help.

alwaysscared · 16/07/2021 18:34

I will do. I split my 50mg in half as I was terrified.
The stomach discomfort is awful, just feel so yucky and I'm guessing that the feeling down my chest is reflux. I just feel like bursting into tears all the time

@SadRainbow good luck with the venlafaxine, I've heard good things

@MotherTruckerr thanks, unfortunately I can't take respite as my 7 year old is suffering from mental health issues at the moment and he just wants me all the time, it's exhausting

@alwaysscared hi, emetophobe here too and just took my first sertraline. I also split it in half (so 25mg) because I was scared of the side effects.
I know yours was a bit of a while ago now. How did you get on?

alwaysscared · 12/04/2024 01:43

@junubu I didn't stay on sertraline in the end as it didn't suit me. I'm now on fluoxetine but still terrible with anxiety and emetophobia.
I hope it suits you, I heard really good things about it but it wasn't for me!
